Argentina’s ‘Wild Tales’ Arrives to the US

Controlling your temper.

It’s something that is easy to say, but it’s sometimes hard to do. This theme is examined in a very creative and interesting way by Argentine filmmaker Damián Szifrón in his latest film, Wild Tales. After hopping from festival to festival (Cannes, Sundance, Telluride, Toronto), the movie finally makes a stop in the US market. I had the opportunity to see it last year and let me tell you, it’s amazing.

The film, produced by Pedro Almodóvar and starring Ricardo Darín, Oscar Martínez, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Érica Rivas, Rita Cortese, Julieta Zylberberg and Darío Grandinetti, tells six different stories in which feelings such as anger, revenge and rage are explored with bits of dark humor and shocking consequences. Every scene and every story is masterfully presented in a way that will leave you feeling in awe and perhaps wondering…”What would I have done in that situation?”

The official synopsis of the film reads:

Inequality, injustice and the demands of the world we live in cause stress and depression for many people. Some of them, however, explode. This is a movie about those people. Vulnerable in the face of a reality that shifts and suddenly turns unpredictable, the characters of ‘Wild Tales’ cross the thin line that divides civilization and barbarism. A lover’s betrayal, a return to the repressed past and the violence woven into everyday encounters drive the characters to madness as they cede to the undeniable pleasure of losing control.”

Wild Tales Relatos Salvajes in spanishis nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language category this year and will compete against Poland’s Ida, Russia’s Leviathan, Mauritania’s Timbuktu and Estonia’s Tangerines. The good news? The film will open in NY and LA on February 20th!
