Weekend B.O.: ‘Focus’ is an Unimpressive #1

Box-office estimates are in for the weekend of February 27th-March 1st 2015.

#1- Focus:

Wow, times have changed. The most recent Will Smith movie- a man who used to open his films to an average of $40-50M- opened to only $19.1M this weekend. To be fair, times have changed for everyone. Even more so, this is also an R-rated film-not his usual fair. Hopefully, even with so-so reviews, this film has a solid multiple to ultimately reach a more impressive total.

#2- Kingsman: The Secret Service:

It seems you can’t keep a Kingsman down. At least at the box-office. For the third weekend in a row, the British spy film held onto second place, this time with a $11.7M weekend. With a $85.6M total, $100+M is looking more and more inevitable.

#3- Fifty Shades of Grey:

As I said last weekend, everything this movie makes from here on out is just the cherry on top of the cake. This weekends $10.9M brought the films stateside total to $147.7M. Overseas, the film is nearing a $500M total. It appears all those trailers that toted the book as a “worldwide phenomenon” weren’t exaggerating.

#4- The SpongeBob Move: Sponge Out of Water:

Like I said last weekend as well, the SpongeBob sequel is already in the clear too. It had around a 32% drop this weekend to bring in $11.2M. With a $140.3M total, the pic based on the yellow sponge and co. keeps rising past most expectations.

#5- The Lazarus Effect:

It really wasn’t a great time at the box-office for either of the pics that debuted this weekend. The horror film starring Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass, yes you read that correctly, opened to a small $10.6M. The saving grace here is the films micro-budget, around $3M, meaning even with this unimpressive weekend it’s already made back production cost.
