Casting “The Craft” Remake

Word spread like wildfire today with news that Sony plans on rebooting the 90’s cult classic “The Craft.” The horror film about a group of teenage girls with supernatural powers starred some of the biggest names in 90’s cinema. Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Skeet Ulrich, and Neve Campbell were all A-listers back in 1996, and since nostalgia is all the rage in 2015, it was only a matter of time before The Craft got remade.

Talented horror director Leigh Janiak is tapped to write and direct the reboot. Janiak’s first horror film, “Honeymoon,” debuted at SXSW in 2014 to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Having a female director could be just the thing this remake needs to outdo the original, but everyone knows a film is only as good as its cast. So I’m here to offer my opinion on what actors I think can bring these witches into the 21st century.

For the role of the scarred witch turned bombshell (originally played by Neve Campbell), I have selected Liana Liberato. Liberato has been on the rise since her breakthrough role in 2010’s “Trust.” She’s proven she can bring the drama in films like “If I Stay,” and Nicholas Sparks’ “The Best of Me,” but can she scream like Neve? Only time will tell.

For the role of the tormented swimmer (originated by Rachel True), I have picked Disney standout Zendaya. Zendaya may not have much experience outside of the Disney Channel, but I think she could bring an element of comedy to the role of Rochelle that wasn’t in the original.

For the main protagonist (originally played by Robin Tunney), I have chosen Skyler Samuels. Samuels may be relatively unknown now, but with roles in “The Duff” and the upcoming Ryan Murphy horror-comedy show “Scream Queens,” she will soon be a household name. With her strawberry blonde locks and thousand-watt smile, I think Samuels is the perfect choice to play the all-powerful Sarah.

For the role of the wicked Nancy (originated by Fairuza Balk), I suggest Elizabeth Gillies. Gillies has proven time and time again that she has no problem playing the bad girl. From her days on Nickelodeon to Lifetime’s “My Father Must Die,” she exudes bad girl vibes. Also, Gillies has a set of pipes on her that rival all other scary movie screams (watch the horror movie “Animal” and you’ll see what I’m talking about).

Finally, for the role of the tortured boy-toy (originally played by Skeet Ulrich), I propose Ansel Elgort because SPOILER ALERT who doesn’t want to see him get thrown out of a window?
