Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter, and directed and co-written by the recent Academy Award winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel), The Revenant has been tailor-made for instant intrigue. Director Iñárritu has not only shot the film in chronological order, but also shot using only natural lighting, making the shoot a long and vigorous one spent over the course of six months. It’s an ambitious shoot and likely one that will pay off with some gorgeous cinematography.

Now we’ll get to see the first hint of whether it was all worth the effort. I’m excited to see how DiCaprio works with the director but even more thrilled to see Hardy and Gleeson–two of the most interesting and versatile actors out there–not only working with Iñárritu but also working with each other. If anything, the film will be a great showcase for the talents involved.

Already on many cinephiles’ most-anticipated lists for the upcoming year, the first look should only solidify that excitement. Will The Revenant keep up the good will garnered by Birdman? Or will it be more divisive like Babel? We’ll have to wait and see, with a wide release for the film not hitting theaters until January 8th, 2016.
