This afternoon it was confirmed that Disney is developing a new live action musical for Mary Poppins. It is said that the new film will take place 20 years after the events of the original, in Depression-era London. The story will be taken from the seven additional novels in the book series, written by P.L. Travers, that follows the ongoing adventures of the Banks family and their far from ordinary nanny. So far, the film has not been labeled a sequel.

As we all know, the original 1964 film starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The film grossed over $100 million at the box office and won five Oscars, including best actress for Andrews.

The new film will be directed by Rob Marshall, who directed the live-action version of Into the Woods, and produced by the team of John DeLuca and Marc Platt (Into the Woods). Disney and Marshall are currently in talks with the Travers estate.

In terms of the music, Disney and Marshall have earned the support of Richard Sherman, who composed the music for the original film with his late brother, Robert.

An official release date has not been announced.
