This Month in Film: June’s New Releases

Finally the month I’ve been waiting for! June is finally here, and there’s a whole crop of movies that I’m dying to see this month. So without further to do, let’s take a look at all the potential cinematic greatness coming out this month!

Friday, June 1st

Snow White and the HuntsmanRead our review + watch the trailer – This is really the only movie that matters this weekend. Universal has marketed SWATH so heavily that if you haven’t heard about it yet, you do live in a cave. Anyway, I saw it the other day, and it’s visually stunning. Director Rupert Sanders is the true star of this thing, folks! (Wide)

PrometheusWatch the trailer – This is the biggest movie of the weekend (and possibly month). Finally, director Ridley Scott returns to the science fiction genre with a prequel to his classic Alien. The early buzz says it’s fantastic. After a yearlong wait, I’m SO ready for this movie. (Wide)

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most WantedWatch the trailer – If you have kids or young siblings, they’re probably shouldn’t see Prometheus, so Madagascar Numero 3 would probably be a good bet for the young’uns. (Wide)

Lola VersusWatch the trailer – Greta Gerwig plays a recently dumped fiancée, who tries to move on from heartbreak. This is one of the indies that I definitely plan on checking out. I like Gerwig’s charm. Plus, I just got into The Killing, so anything with Joel Kinnaman in it is a must-see. (Limited)

Bel AmiWatch the trailer – This one is for the Twihards! Robert Pattinson sleeps his way around to advance in society. The movie has been out on VOD, iTunes and Amazon the past month. But if you were hoping to check it out on the big screen, here’s your chance. (Limited)

Safety Not GuaranteedWatch the trailer – This movie garnered some buzz from a few film festivals earlier this year. I think it looks interesting. Pretty sure the trailer will make it or break it for you though. (Limited)

Friday, June 15th

Rock of AgesWatch the trailer – This movie looks like so much fun! Some great classics being performed by an all-star cast that includes: Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige, Malin Ackerman, Bryan Cranston, Paul GIamatti, Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta? There’s nothing to complain about! (Wide)

BraveWatch the trailer – I am such a Pixar nerd. Hence, without a doubt, I’m too excited for Pixar’s first movie with a female protagonist. From the trailers and clips, I absolutely adore Princess Merida and can’t wait to embark on her journey with her. In addition, the animation looks exquisite. (Wide)

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire HunterWatch the trailer – What if Abraham Lincoln was a vampire hunter? I guess you’ll find out in this movie. There hasn’t been much promo surrounding this movie, surprisingly. So after watching the trailer, it’s safe to say I’m intrigued.  (Wide)

Seeking a Friend for the End of the WorldWatch the trailer – I like Keira Knightley and Steve Carell. They make an interesting, if unexpected, team. Plus, with it being 2012, an end of the world movie seems a bit fitting. (Wide)

To Rome With Love Watch the trailer – Last year, Woody Allen came out with the wonderful Midnight in Paris. This year, his latest movie is set in Rome with a cool cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Penelope Cruz, Roberto Benigni and Ellen Page.  (Limited)

Beasts of the Southern WildWatch the trailer – This movie has been winning festival awards left and right, since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. The entire buzz for it has been insanely positive, and it looks to be a possible Oscar contender. I really loved what I saw in the trailer and can’t wait to see for myself what everyone has been raving about!

Friday, June 29th

Magic MikeWatch the trailer – Ladies (and some gents), are you ready? ARE YOU READY? On a completely shallow level, I definitely am looking forward to seeing this very attractive cast play a bunch of male strippers. And if you didn’t know, it’s loosely based off Channing Tatum’s life. (Wide)

People Like UsWatch the trailer – I must say that I don’t see many brother-sister movies, so this one looks like a nice surprise. It doesn’t hurt that Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks are actors I both like. (Wide)

TedWatch the trailer – Mark Wahlberg plays a grown man who still has an attachment to his teddy bear. But what makes this special? The fact that his teddy bear can speak and move! It looks to be a very funny, if crude, comedy.  (Wide)

Take This WaltzWatch the trailer – This movie is also currently available VOD or iTunes. Starring Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen, it might be easy for this indie to slip your radar. However, I hear it’s great, and the trailer makes it seem like the buzz is true. (Limited)

Also being released this month:

For Greater Glory – 6/1 (Wide)

High School – 6/1 (Limited)

Piranha 3DD – 6/1 (Limited)
