TMI casting news: Alex Pettyfer as Jace? & We see what you’re trying to do there, Screen Gems!

UPDATE from Cassie Clare: “I know Alex has met with the director, Scott Stewart, several times; I know he screened Scott’s movie, Priest, and loved it; I know he read the TMI books over the holidays and really liked them and liked Jace, and his representatives are negotiating making a deal for the role of Jace. At this point it’s all about the deal, which really doesn’t have anything to do with me, so I stand back and wait for news like the rest of you.”

Here, at TYF, we’re big fans of the “Mortal Instruments” series. So of course, we are excited about every new piece of movie news we can get on “City of Bones.” If you are just finding out, Screen Gems is working on adapting the first TMI novel into film. So far there’s a script (that needs tweaking), a director (Scott Charles Stewart), and a star (Lily Collins as Clary).

According to Vulture, Screen Gems is after Alex Pettyfer (“Beastly,” “ I Am Number Four”) for the role of Jace. Pettyfer is a HUGE favorite among TMI fans. So much so, that fans are declaring boycotts if Mr. Pettyfer doesn’t get the role. Well, now it’s not really about him getting the role. He has it, IF he wants it. That’s a big “IF.” Vulture goes on to say that:

“Screen Gems chief Clint Culpepper feels so strongly about casting Pettyfer in the supernatural love story that he only wants to green-light the film if he can land the actor. Negotiations are expected to begin late this week, and a formal announcement could come as early as next.” Read more here at Vulture.

Pettyfer has already starred in two young adult novel adaptations, which will be coming out within the next two months. He may want to branch out of the supernatural teen genre. Or maybe not. It depends on how sweet a deal Screen Gems makes to him this week. If TMI fans are any indication, we expect the franchise to do pretty well in the box office, especially if Pettyfer takes the role.

Another thing comes to mind with Screen Gems. It’s a production company that tends to work in-house. By that we mean, they use writers, directors, actors, etc. that have worked on their movies in the past. “City of Bones” will be the third movie Scott Charles Stewart has directed for Screen Gems. His previous two are “Legion” and “Priest.”  Lily Collins happens to star in Stewart’s “Priest.” Does this give us any indication on what other actors Screen Gems may offer other TMI roles to? Definitely.  Here’s a list of actors who’ve appeared in a few Screen Gems films lately: Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Leighton Meester, Stanley Tucci, Penn Badgley, Alyson Michalka, Channing Tatum, and Minka Kelly.

We are NOT saying that these actors have been offered anything. This is merely a list of who may be considered. We wouldn’t be surprised if one or two of these actors made the cut. Paul Bettany has worked with Stewart on both “Legion” and “Priest;” can you see him fitting into any character in the TMI series? Also, Cam Gigandet is another actor on our list we wouldn’t be surprised to see in the movie.

If all goes to plan with Pettyfer this week, the film will start shooting in March. It hasn’t been said where the shooting will take place. Personally, we hope it takes place in New York City. Not only is it true to the story, but it may allow one of the “Gossip Girl” actors (Penn Badgley, Leighton Meester) to jump sets. We totally wouldn’t mind seeing Penn play Simon.
