8 of the Best Movie Trailer Mashups

Throughout our lives, we’ve all been made aware of the sentiment — one whose truth can be debated — that “opposites attract.” When it does work, like in the combination of sweet and salty or sweet and sour, the two opposing forces come together in delicious synergy. And it doesn’t start and end with foods, oh no. It can be carried over into all facets of life, particularly in entertainment, where we have a plethora of genres to pair with one another and see if magic happens. Bearing this pro-opposites attract mentality, my fellow TYF staff member Tyler Christian and I thought it fitting to list our favorite movie trailer mashups, featuring the creations from YouTuber The Unusual Suspect. We’ll start off with Tyler’s picks after the cut!

Toy Story  x Man of Steel

In the buildup to the highly anticipated release of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, we wouldn’t be serving proper justice (pun not intended) for not including this mashup. The backstory of Buzz Lightyear is a favorite amongst Pixar fans, and it being done in the style of the final Man of Steel trailer gives us a brief yet thrilling illusion of him being a praised superhero like Kal-El. Although this was made before Man of Steel came to the big screen, there are some neat parallels to clips in the Batman V. Superman Comic Con trailer, most notably when other toys are seen reaching out to Buzz as if he were a god-like figure.

Pulp Fiction  x Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Unforgettable neo-noir meets black and white comic book noir. Although the slick final trailer for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is way better than the film itself, its sharp editing led to this all-too-cool portrayal of one of the greatest movies of all-time in black and white form.

The Phantom Menace  x The Force Awakens

The day that the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped online, the internet exploded with hype. It became a full-on reality that we’d be able to experience new environments in the illustrious Star Wars universe, in addition to seeing new and returning characters. We can only imagine how similar that feeling was when the first trailer for The Phantom Menace was screened in theaters. After watching this mashup I’m sure you’d wish that it had been the actual teaser for Phantom Menace, especially because it excludes any footage featuring Jar Jar Binks.

Toy Story  x Fight Club

Yes, yet another crossover with Toy Story, but this one takes it to edgier levels. All the lighthearted moments of the trilogy vanish when the sounds of David Fincher’s 1999 cult classic are synced over the action. All it’s missing for full authenticity is saturation of the footage with the trademark yellow and blue color schemes Fincher uses in his films.

Guardians of the Galaxy  x Suicide Squad

We’re kicking off my picks with possibly my very favorite trailer mashup to date!

When the Suicide Squad trailer reached San Diego Comic Con last summer, fans erupted in excitement and anticipation of the David Ayer-directed film. Laying Queen’s universally-loved classic we saw in the DC film’s sneak peek over the 2014 beloved hit — perfectly timed to every beat of Star-Lord and Company’s quests against evil — is cheeky and charming.

The Hunger Games  x Teen Rom-Com

Admittedly, this mashup is a bit silly, as it parodies a lot of mid-2000s teen romantic comedies through the lens of one of the most popular post-apocalyptic dystopia sagas of recent years. Not exactly a match made in heaven, but when love triangles become love dodecahedrons, spiraling closer and closer to the inane presented in a way that mirrors She’s the Man, you realize the clever jab.

Spider-Man  x Deadpool

If you know anything about me, you know that my favorite superhero is Spider-Man and my favorite anti-hero-that’s-still-super is Deadpool. Taking my two personal greats and colliding them into one, couching Peter Parker’s tame-in-comparison snark in Deadpool’s all-or-nothing world, is like a dream. A sarcasm-riddled, high-energy and sometimes crude dream, but a dream nonetheless.

Harry Potter  x Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

It can be quite easy to forget that Harry Potter is, at his most basic, a teenage boy with immense power and even greater responsibility attempting to defeat the dark and malicious forces. Enter 20-something Scott Pilgrim who, in his own way, faces the same kinds of adversities as he tries his hand at navigating the weird world of young love paired with superhero-like battles. This crossover wittily brings to the forefront the often overlooked humour that is so unique to J.K. Rowling’s ineffable series, likening the seven horcruxes to Ramona Flowers’s seven evil exes.
