Adam Shankman To Direct Enchanted Sequel

(L_R) AMY ADAMS, PATRICK DEMPSEY

Way back in the olden days of 2007, when the first iPhone roamed, and Spider Man 3 made the skies cloudy all day, a charming little movie called Enchanted made everybody’s thanksgiving a little happier. It was a wonderful deconstruction of the Disney musical with a lovable turn by relative unknown Amy Adams (shame we haven’t heard from her since). A sequel has been in development since then, but to no avail. However, things finally seem to be getting going with Adam Shankman (Hairspray, Rock Of Ages) taking the director’s chair and Adams reprising the role. The film is expected to shoot next summer.

I can’t say that I’m thrilled with this choice. Shankman is a competent choreographer but not a particularly intelligent filmmaker. His movies are often more sugar than substance, and Enchanted was great because it was so clever. Also, this would have been a great opportunity for a female director. In fact, The Proposal’s Anne Fletcher was attached before Shankman. Hopefully he will advance the story and not simply opt to remake the first one. It’s been long enough that he could take the lazy approach of relying on nostalgia. Also, it’s unclear if James Marsden will be reprising his scene stealing role as the prince. He must, I command it. Hopefully the film finally gets off the ground and creates a meta parody for a new age of Disney princesses.
