Man Down, the new film by Dito Montiel, director of A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, will finally hit theaters on December 2nd, after almost two years of buzz.  The plot follows the story of a Marine returning home, chronicling his search for his estranged wife and child and his relationship with a close friend from the front.  From the trailer, and some early reviews, a focus of the film seems to fall on the complex emotional landscape of military operatives and veterans.

The movie stars Shia LaBeouf, giving him the chance to re-use the extensive military training he underwent for 2014’s Fury.  After the wrapping of his last Transformers movie in 2011, LaBeouf seems to have hit his stride in festival and arthouse film, including Nymphomaniac I and II, by renowned Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier, and this year’s well-reviewed American Honey. Kate Mara, best known for House of Cards, co-stars as LaBeouf’s lost wife, and Jai Courtney, as LaBeouf’s “battle buddy”, continues his streak of military-related performances.

Between the well-regarded director and socially relevant subject matter, Man Down, look primed to have a significant effect on winter’s film scene and, judging from reviews, might have a chance in this year’s award’s season.

Watch LaBeouf in the trailer for what may become his most well-regarded film to date.
