Effervescent New Trailer for 20th Century Women

The second trailer for 20th Century Women, the upcoming Mike Mills film has been released.  Mills is an artist, designer and award-winning director, whose 2011 film Beginners gained widespread acclaim. Similarities have already been drawn between the two films, both are loosely based on his own family experience, with Beginners centering his experiences with his father, and 20th Century Women his mother, both films have strong ensemble casts, and feature found-image montage.

The trailer has a strong sense of setting featuring beautiful shots of the California landscape that all seem to have been filmed in the afternoon light and a strong sense of the late 70’s. The film has already gained significant attention for Annette Bening’s performance, but from the trailer I suspect it will also gain attention for its glimmering visuals and out of the box soundtrack. Read the official synopsis and watch the trailer below.

Set in Santa Barbara, the film follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann, in a breakout performance) at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamie’s upbringing – Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy and provocative teenage neighbor.
