SDCC ’12: End of Watch and Silent Hill: Revelation

Continuing our San Diego Comic-Con 2012 recap, here’s the upcoming films END OF WATCH and SILENT HILL: REVELATION

END OF WATCHStarring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena

While most of the films that are promoted in Hall H have some sort of superheroes and science-fiction within the film’s DNA, END OF WATCH is one of the exceptions this year, dealing with two young cops (Gyllenhaal and Pena) who find money and firearms that belong to a powerful drug cartel and wind up being their targets. On stage, actor Michael Pena and director David Ayer were present to answer fan questions, meanwhile, Jake Gyllenhaal couldn’t be in Hall H but he introduced a clip of the film. Do you remember the police cameras inside the car that they show on TV? Well, those are used in END OF WATCH, the film was shot in documentary style, so get ready for shaky cameras during action sequences. During the panel, Ayer and Pena explained that for some scenes they had to use cameras strapped to their shoulder, kind of giving a “point of view” shot. In my opinion, I liked the way it was shot because it gives the film a real feel as if I was right there with the cops. Officer Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Officer Zavala (Pena) seem to be in this corrupt world, just good cops that are actually doing their job, that if in the case that one of them would die, the other would support their family. They both have families and they are also aware that once you become a cop nobody likes you. Furthermore, if you see the picture posted above, it was from one of the clips shown in Hall H in which both officers joke with each other about their families and backgrounds. Gyllenhaal and Pena work great with each other, their chemistry made me believe like these guys were really friends, later during the panel we found out that this very scene was all improvised.  Overall, I am excited to see END OF WATCH, not because I like cop dramas, but because it shows them in a different light, plus Gyllenhaal and Pena sold me in their portrayal of cops and the way it was filmed it is definitely something to look out for.

SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3DStarring Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harrington

I’m pretty sure everyone in Hall H went to buy food or the restroom during this panel. Listen, nothing wrong with liking SILENT HILL, but a second movie? Really? This panel caught me completely off guard. Two clips from the film were shown, one of them with Heather (Adelaide Clemens) fighting off some mannequins. The second film featured Vincent (Kit Harrington) tied up to a bed trying to fight off some creepy looking nurse mannequins. Yup, they were all in 3D and for some they might even have been scary, but overall almost no one in Hall H was amused by them. I’m pretty sure that they used the panel not necessarily to show an actual trailer of the film, but to say that Konami (the company that created the Silent Hill videogame) will be taking SILENT HILL for Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights. I have been to Horror Nights before and they are a blast, I just hope that if they take mannequins that they are scarier than the ones in the film.
