The Stunning New International Trailer for Scorsese’s Silence

The international trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Silence is here, and it gives a better sense of the film’s epic visual quality than the previously released trailer.  In the new trailer boats appear as small blips on a vast sea and characters are dwarfed by imposing hills and horror-movie levels of fog.  It’s hard to believe these punishing visuals were created by the duo behind 2013’s candy-bright The Wolf of Wall Street, nonetheless Silence is the second collaboration between Scorsese and Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto.

The subject matter of Silence, like the visuals, could not be more different from The Wolf of Wall Street.  Silence follows two young priests who join the Catholic church’s missionary efforts in Japan in the 17th century.  The two men encounter an array of hardships as they attempt to spread their faith and hunt down their mentor, who has fallen off the church’s radar.

Silence stars Andrew Garfield (Spiderman) and Adam Driver (The Force Awakens), two actors who have received acclaim for blockbuster and indie performances alike, as the young priests.  Liam Neeson plays the long lost Father Ferreira. The film is partially in Japanese and features and impressive list of international actors including Tadanobu Asano, known for his role in Thor.

Silence has been long-awaited by the film fans, as Scorsese struggled to get the movie made, but from the trailers released, decorated cast, and early critical reviews, it seems Silence will finally fulfill the hopes moviegoers worldwide when it’s released in January 2017.
