Coming out March 8th, 2013, Admission stars Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, which is about an admissions officer (Tina Fey) who encounters a boy- the same boy she gave up for adoption years ago. The film also stars Michael Sheen, Wallace Shawn, and Gloria Reuben.
The official synopsis for the film is, “… about the surprising detours we encounter. Straight-laced Princeton University admissions officer Portia Nathan (Fey) is caught off-guard when she makes a recruiting visit to an alternative high school overseen by her former college classmate, the free-wheeling John Pressman (Rudd). Pressman has surmised that Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), his gifted yet very unconventional student, might well be the son that Portia secretly gave up for adoption many years ago. Soon, Portia finds herself bending the rules for Jeremiah, putting at risk the life she thought she always wanted — but in the process finding her way to a surprising and exhilarating life and romance she never dreamed of having.”
Looking at the trailer, the film promises a few romantic laughs. It reminds me of a sort of Date Night situation, but I fear that it won’t be as comedic as I want it to be. Tina Fey and Paul Rudd bring intelligent humor to everything they do, but to me, it seems that this will be too romantically clichéd to last in the long run- comedy-wise. Just like The Proposal, I am quite sure the film will have its laughs here and there, but the formula will be the same.
I believe the biggest problem I do have with the trailer and the film’s overall plot is that it reminds me a bit too much of Liz Lemon from 30 Rock. Think about it- a forty something looking for love while being too absorbed in her job, looking to succeed further while dealing with the everyday stress of the people around her- like her unknown child perhaps.
So while I might have some misgivings about the plot, Tina Fey and Paul Rudd are involved, so it has to be funny. In the meantime, watch the two official trailers here:
