Film News: First Look at Steve McQueen’s ‘Twelve Years a Slave’

Steve McQueen and Fox Searchlight’s highly-anticipated film Twelve Years a Slave has people buzzing around Hollywood. There were rumors that the film was going to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month but unfortunately those rumors turned out to be false. Even though the film won’t be released to major audiences until December 27th , Fox Searchlight is already fueling the marketing machine by releasing a few photos from the film to help audiences get sneak peek into the look and feel of the film before it hits theaters.

Twelve Years a Slave is undoubtedly director Steve McQueen’s biggest Hollywood production yet. It carries a star filled cast including recognizable names such as: Brad Pitt, Alfre Woodard, Michael Fassbender, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Michael K. Williams, Ruth Negga, Paul Giamatti, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Chiwetel Ejiofor will star as the lead in the film, Solomon Northup, an African-American man who was born free but was kidnapped and sold into slavery.

While Steve McQueen is a seasoned artist and director most of his work were on a smaller scale. His 2nd feature film Shame (2011) received a lot of praise from critics. It’ll be interesting to see if he can pull it off with with his new film but by the looks of these of pictures, it looks like he’s had no problem turning this film into a something that will be greatly considered- and hopefully recognized- during awards season. Perhaps this is the film that will nab McQueen his first Oscar nomination for Best Director.
