Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class co-writer Jane Goldman has been chosen by 20th Century Fox to pen ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’, a gothic novel written by Ransom Riggs. Tim Burton is currently in talks to direct the film, but the report from Deadline suggests that he is by no means committed to the project.
The story follows Jacob, a 16-year-old visiting his recently deceased grandfather’s home in Wales. While there, he “discovers the abandoned remains of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” an orphanage he was told about as a child. Housed in this institution is “a girl who could hold fire in her hands, another whose feet never touched the ground, and twins who communicated without speaking.” As Jacob explores, “he can see the children were more than peculiar, they might have been there because they were dangerous.” You can read TYF’s favorable review of the book to get a better idea of what the story is about.
Goldman recently completed The Woman in Black, a hauntingly dark film starring Daniel Radcliffe and is rumoured to be reteaming with Matthew Vaughn for a sequel to X-Men:First Class. She has certainly proven that she has the skills to write successful films, but could a Goldman/Burton teaming make or break this adaptation? While Burton was successful in the box office with Alice in Wonderland, fans of the fairytale were not too pleased. Personally I would rather Burton pass on the project. But I have full confidence in the abilities of Jane Goldman.
