Sebastian Stan Talks About Upcoming Role As The Winter Soldier

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier only a mere month away from hitting the big screen, Sebastian Stan spoke with ScreenRant about his upcoming role as the fabled Winter Soldier. Yes the same Sebastian Stan who played Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger. Don’t worry, Marvel wants you to know who the Winter Soldier is. The studio has made next to no real effort to hide his identity after all.

I think in my brain I knew or I hoped I knew a long, long time ago, but I didn’t really know until about a year ago to be quite honest.” Stan explains in his interview.

Given the massive popularity of Ed Brubaker original run of Captain America where he first wrote the story of the Winter Soldier, it’d pretty hard not to know who the Soviet Assassin is in this day and age of internet frenzy. Fans everywhere were already discussing fervently about the possibility of the storyline occurring when Stan was original cast as Bucky Barnes back in 2010.

It obviously came up in discussions very early on when I got involved and that was part of the excitement for me. And looking back, I should’ve sort of asked myself whether I could’ve known in any way, shape or form, but it really is one of the more interesting storylines that Steve Rogers has.” Stan explains.

Therefore is seems almost pointless to play dumb with an audience whose majority already knows Bucky Barnes becomes the Soviet assassin Winter Soldier later down the line. Most likely the dramatic punch of Winter Soldier, will most likely come, not from specifically finding out who the Winter Soldier is, but how Steve Rogers will deal with it.

Stan states that while there’s no flashback scenes there is an emphasis on the relationship Steve and Bucky Barnes had, “so that you really do remember what that relationship was.”

Another major part of the Winter Soldier mythos was his relationship with the Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff, played by Scarlett Johansson in the film. The two have been a long beloved couple in Marvel Comics, however it was already revealed that their relationship has been changed in the MCU [Marvel Cinimatic Universe].

Though Stan reassures fans that, “there’s always, always these possibilities.” So while it’s possible there could be a potential Black Widow/Winter Soldier romance in the future, Stan explains he, “[doesn’t] think it’s generally going to be explored in this film.”

As for the future of Bucky Barnes, Stan doesn’t quite know where the character might end up in later features. In the comics Bucky becomes the Winter Soldier, then eventually dons the identity of Captain America. However Stan isn’t sure if that’s in the cards for one Bucky Barnes.

There will be an answer one day, but who knows.”

If any fans are worried about the new costume Stan jokily says, “I was very open to it. Obviously I’ve never had long hair. As an actor, the thing is you’ve gotta get out of that comfortability level once in a while. I was really excited to sort of not recognize a little bit of myself when I looked in the mirror.”

And don’t worry fans, despite the mask, Winter Soldier isn’t going to be pulling a Bane anytime soon.

I think it’s gonna be very different than Bane.” Thank goodness for that.
