Each month we’ll try to spotlight what we think may be your best bets for the next four weeks. February is usually filled with romantic movies, all circling around Valentine’s Day, and action or kids movies aimed to take over the box office President’s Day weekend. But this year, it looks like February has a bit more diversity. Here are some of the films we think (or know) are worthy of checking out this month.
Summary: Three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.
Thoughts: When I first saw this trailer, I was like WHOA. Which is weird for me, I must say, because I’m not big on found footage movies. This one actually looked like a cool mix between Heroes and Misfits, TV shows that I both enjoyed. The buzz around it says it’s good, so hey, doesn’t hurt to check it out!
Summary: A young lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe) travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.
Thoughts: First off, I’m not a fan of horror, but I am a fan of Harry Potter. I’m curious to see how Daniel Radcliffe fares outside the franchise that made him famous. Some buzz I’ve heard said that this is a pretty good movie. Whatever the case, The Woman in Black looks like it will draw both horror fans and fans dealing with Post-Potter Depression.

Summary: A young CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds) is tasked with looking after a fugitive (Denzel Washington) in a safe house. But when the safe house is attacked, he finds himself on the run with his charge.
Thoughts: The trailer for this movie looks SO good. Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington seem to make a great team. Plus, it has a supporting cast that includes Brendan Gleeson and Vera Farmiga. I’m sold.

The Vow – Friday, Feb. 10 – Watch the trailer
Summary: A car accident puts Paige (Rachel McAdams) in a coma, and when she wakes up with severe memory loss, her husband Leo (Channing Tatum) works to win her heart again.

Summary: Two top CIA operatives (Chris Pine, Tom Hardy) wage an epic battle against one another after they discover they are dating the same woman (Reese Witherspoon).
Thoughts: They’re always two *top* CIA operatives… Anyway, this movie kind of looks like a flop (not box-office-wise, more like quality-wise), but for some reason I’m seeing it tonight actually. I’ll be posting a review tomorrow. If I’m so negative about it, why did it make the list? Well, it makes the list because of the sole presence of Tom Hardy. I am of mind that he can save any film; I guess we’ll see…
Summary: As Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) hides out in Eastern Europe, he is called upon to stop the devil, who is trying to take human form.
Thoughts: I saw the first Ghost Rider and didn’t like it. I didn’t even understand why they bothered making a sequel. After watching trailer, I understand that they aren’t going for a better story, but they’re definitely going for better/cooler special effects.
Summary: The Clock family are four-inch-tall people who live anonymously in another family’s residence, borrowing simple items to make their home. Life changes for the Clocks when their daughter, Arrietty, is discovered.
Thoughts: Animated films like this one don’t ever catch my eye. However, once I saw the trailer, I couldn’t help but become slightly enchanted by The Secret World of Arrietty. It’s defnitely one of the films I looking forward to this month.
