Weekend B.O. estimates are in for the weekend of October 24-26, 2014
#1 – Ouija
This movie provides the kind of scares younger audiences eat up: horror stories based on somewhat real experiences. Can a toy really cause this kind of haunting to happen? No. Does inexplicable stuff sometimes happen when “summoning spirits?” I don’t know, but there’s an ice cube’s chance in hell I’ll try and find out. Can a movie about this toy pull in a $20M opening regardless? Yes. But audiences and critics alike have both hated what they’ve seen on screen. So, will the movie be able to bring in a good chunk of cash after this weekend? Ouija board points to ‘no.’
#2 – John Wick
Hey, it’s Keanu Reeves! And hey, he’s in a movie that’s getting awesome reviews! I bet you haven’t heard that in years. That combination was able to bring this small budget action flick to a $14M opening weekend. Considering Keanu’s last movie had a $175M budget and opened to a $10M weekend, this looks like a slam-dunk.
#3 – Fury
Over the week, I haven’t been hearing the best things about this film as a whole. Does that show in the second weekend? Not really. The WWII vehicle had a 45% hold to bring in another $13M. But, with only $46M in the bank so far, the tank-based movie still has tracks to make before being considered a real financial success.

#4 – Gone Girl
The mystery thriller has now firmly staked its position as the most financially successful film in the first half of the fall. With an $11M weekend for a $124M total, the movie is only days away from being David Fincher’s highest grossing film in the entirety of the director’s 22-year career. Final number estimates continue to rise as analysts can’t quite figure out how high this will go.
#5 – The Book of Life
The Day of the Dead-themed kiddie flick still has children dragging their parents into theaters. With a $9.8M second weekend, it doesn’t look like it will be able to carry its $29.9M total to a number that stands out from the pack. Nearly every children’s movie has run the same trajectory over these past two months. Look for that to change in a few weeks when Big Hero 6 skyrockets out of the gate.

#6 – St. Vincent: $8M weekend
