Ahead of their new album, Relaxer, Alt-J released the album’s second song and first official single this afternoon, on BBC Radio 1 with MistaJam. The song is titled “In Cold Blood,” and features rollicking drums and eclectic synthesizers, as well as Joe Newman’s distinctive vocals.
Speaking on MistaJam’s show, the band revealed that they had started writing the song while in university at Leeds, but “never really finished it” until work began on their new album.
The album follows 2014’s This is All Yours. Earlier this month, the band released another song, “3WW,” to their YouTube channel.
Relaxer is due out on June 2 via Canvasback Records in the U.S. and Infectious Music in the U.K. The original release date was set for June 9th, but Alt-J announced via Instagram that they would release the album a week early. They had previously announced the date change via Twitter in a tweet that has since been deleted.
It’s time to reveal a second (and the second) track from RELAXER – ‘In Cold Blood’. It’s a song we began writing in our Leeds days and finished last year in London. The brass was recorded at Abbey Road; the keyboards were done on a Casiotone that cost £1.05 on eBay; and no-one is quite sure where the key change came from. We hope you enjoy it. Pre-orders for Relaxer are available on Alt-J’s website.
