Interview: Dizzy

Dizzy is a band of brothers Charlie, Alex and Mackenzie Spencer and their friend Katie Munshaw who reside in Oshawa, Ontario. Their debut single, “Stars and Moons” recently came out so we got to chat with the lead singer, Katie Munshaw, about the track and what the band will listen to as they hit the road and go on tour.

TYF: How did you guys come up with the band name Dizzy?
Katie Munshaw: It was random. We liked the phonetics and the simplicity of it. I wish there was a cooler explanation for this. Maybe I’ll make up a story. Ask me again later.

TYF: Can you tell us how the band formed?
Munshaw: Charlie and I took a year off after high school to focus on a duo project. We realized about a year later that we wanted to grow creatively so we tried adding Charlie’s brothers Mack and Alex to the mix.

TYF: I read that you guys are from a suburb of Oshawa, Ontario. Did growing up in the suburbs influence your music at all?
Munshaw: Lyrically, yes. I think most writers write about the relationships that form within their spaces, so consequently, the stories I write are influenced by where I live and the people that live near me.

TYF: How did it influence your music?
Munshaw: I write about a lot of standard subjects that every single person in the entire world goes through no matter where in the world they live. Heartbreak and loss and love. Maybe the suburbs let me see it all through a different lens than a person who lives in a big concrete city or beside a lazy, sunny beach. Some of the most pivotal points in my life have happened in mundane, unglamorous places. In a McDonalds at 2 am or in a stranger’s bathroom at a house party or at the bottom of a swimming pool. The scenery is a bit dull in reality but it translates well into words. I’ve gotten good at romanticizing shitholes.

TYF: Who are some of your favorite artists/bands that you guys look up to?
Munshaw: Incubus, Alvvays, Radiohead, London Grammar, Miles Davis, Frank Ocean, Stars.

TYF: You guys just released your debut single, “Stars and Moon,” – what is your writing process?
Munshaw: It’s pretty different every time but with “Stars and Moons” Charlie came to me with the structure of the song and I wrote the melody and lyrics over top. Then we brought Mack and Alex into the game to sprinkle their flares into the mix.

TYF: Can we get any hints to the new music you guys are releasing in 2018?
Munshaw: The themes are bittersweet.

TYF: What are you guys looking forward to most about going on tour?
Munshaw: I’m looking forward to going back to the Meatball Shop in New York and playing our music for fresh ear holes.

TYF: What can fans expect at your upcoming shows?
Munshaw: I like to dance so bring some flat soled shoes.
