The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced the inductees for their 2018 class earlier this week.
Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues and Nina Simone will be officially inducted into the Hall at a ceremony at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio on April 14.
This year marked the first time that Dire Straits, The Moody Blues and Nina Simone appeared on the nomination ballot. Bon Jovi had been nominated once before, in 2011, and The Cars were on their third consecutive nomination.
Bon Jovi won this year’s fan vote, with 1.16 million votes. The nominees with the top five votes in the fan poll were included on a ballot that counted as a single vote among several hundred other ballots from critics, music experts, recording executives and artists who had already been inducted into the Hall.
To be eligible for nomination to the Hall, an artist must have released their first recording – single or album – no later than 25 prior to the year of nomination. No first year eligible acts made it in this year, and that includes Radiohead, who were widely expected to be inducted. The other acts who were nominated but not inducted were Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, The J. Geils Band, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, Link Wray, The MC5, The Meters, Rage Against the Machine, Rufus with Chaka Khan and The Zombies.
Gospel singer and guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who is considered to be a significant influence on the development of the rock genre, was also on the ballot but was inducted as an Early Influence.
