A few weeks back, we hit up Lauv’s concert and loved it. Someone very similar whom we recommend if you like Lauv, DallasK. His name might not sound familiar but it’s definitely one you should get used to hearing. The producer/songwriter/DJ has worked with everyone from Hardwell & Tiesto to producing and co-writing Fifth Harmony’s track “Work From Home.” So, needless to say, he’s not a newcomer to the music industry.
He is, however, a newcomer to put his vocals on his own music. In his latest singles, “All My Life” and “Self Control,” we hear DallasK show his additional talent and we applaud him! Check out our interview with DallasK below and get familiar with his work!
The Young Folks: How did you get into the producer/songwriter scene? What is your origin story?
DallasK: The production / songwriter scene fell into my lap after I had moved to LA. For years before that I had been producing club records for myself and DJing and as I started to tour, I found myself more and more in Los Angeles. I was lucky enough to meet some of the best producers and songwriters of our generation and quickly found myself alongside of them in the studio. Two parts luck and one part hard work.
The Young Folks: As you were growing your name within the industry, what’s one of the best things you learned throughout the years?
DallasK: Be kind to everyone, and know that this business is a journey that will have peaks and valleys.
The Young Folks: For so many of us who haven’t been on the other side of a show where you’re actually on stage, what is it like to be on stage in front of huge crowds, just dancing their hearts out?
DallasK: It’s the best feeling! It really never gets old and there is an inexplicable energy that you get from it. It’s like you’re in tune with the universe.
The Young Folks: Where do you draw your inspiration from or how do you get out of funks if you’re putting a new song together but you, of course, want it to sound unique?
DallasK: I listen to a ton of music from all different time periods and genres. Your brain combines everything you’ve ever heard and synthesizes new music from that, so I feel like if you expand your “database,” so to speak, it can help draw you out of a funk or think of something new.
The Young Folks: With your two new songs, we hear your vocals for the first time. Was that nerve-wracking? Was it something you’ve always wanted to do? What was that like for you?
DallasK: It wasn’t a goal of mine until I realized it was a possibility. I was writing songs every day but I was always working with writers with incredible voices and incredible artists, so I wasn’t the one singing. But, I was striving to bring authenticity and personality to my new records and I realized this was the way. It was and has been nerve-wracking but I’m definitely excited about the outcome.

The Young Folks: You’ve been on so many stages. What’s been your most memorable performance to date?
DallasK: One of my favorites was the show I did with my good friends Henry Fong and Milo and Otis two years ago in Orlando. We all started DJing together in Orlando when we were still in college and we all ended up touring the world so it was a really special moment to bring everyone back together and play a show in our hometown.
The Young Folks: Since so many of your listeners will most likely be dancing along to your music, what’s your go-to song or artist you hands down have no problem dancing along to?
DallasK: I love Salsa music and classic Latin music. I can bust a move to almost anything, but something about the tempo of Salsa… [It] just gets me.
The Young Folks: Say if this was an alternate timeline, what would your life be like right now if you didn’t pursue a career in music?
DallasK: When I was growing up I really wanted to be an architect and still have a passion for architecture, so maybe that… Definitely not as fun as making music every day.
