It’s about that time of the year where we need to prep our summer playlist. Crazy to think it’s almost that time but here we are. For those nights when you’re chilling out and would opt for a soundtrack to reflect that, pop in Violet Days’ latest single “Somber.” Violet Days is a Sweden-based synthpop composed of vocalist Lina Hansson and producer Kris Erikkson. Fresh off their SXSW appearance, the duo is all about jumping onto the next thing which, in this case, is their upcoming EP Made in My Head. Before they finish up the EP and release it to the world, we had a chance to chat with Lina to learn more about their time at SXSW, working with morgxn, and where you can catch them perform live in the near future!
The Young Folks: For our readers just hearing about you for the first time, can you tell us a bit about Violet Days – how did you decide to come together to make Violet Days?
Lina Hansson: I guess you could describe Violet Days as my alter ego; it´s a project that I developed together with my producer/songwriting partner Kris Eriksson. We wanted to make something special, and make Violet Days be a world of its own. It’s alternative pop stories that come from a truthful place. We work a lot with concepts and right now we’re releasing songs up to an EP that will come out in the summer. This EP is called Made in my Head and it’s a love story balancing between insecurities and passion. It’s built around two characters from a ‘60s comic book that we developed into this world and we wanted to have them tell the story.
The Young Folks: We saw that you guys just came back from SXSW! What was that experience like?
Hansson: SXSW was absolutely amazing; it was such a fun experience! It’s crazy to play so many shows in that short amount of time and you never know in what situations you might end up, but that’s the fun part about it. There is no prestige in it and you see tons of bands struggling with carrying instruments all around town; it’s a great place to meet creative people.
The Young Folks: During your time in SXSW, we also saw that you went to a songwriting camp! What was the biggest takeaway you learned while attending?
Hansson: We started our trip with the songwriting camp and it was so great! The quality of songs were super high and all the people attending were super talented and nice. Couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick of SXSW. Definitely found some great friends there and will keep collaborating with them in the future, for sure.
The Young Folks: Congrats on the release of “Somber”! How did you decide to team up with morgxn for this one? Did he have a hand in morphing the song into what it is today in terms of the lyrics or the feel of maybe in the music video?
Hansson: Thank you! We went to LA in May last year and we had a session with morgxn and wrote “Somber” that day. It was such a nice day; we had some tea, chatted about life, cuddled with his dog, played the piano, and suddenly we had a song. It almost felt like it wrote itself because there was not much of an effort writing it. I think our minds just lined up and wanted to tell the same story.
The Young Folks: This is just the first of many and we’re excited about your upcoming EP. What can we expect to hear next?
Hansson: Next up is a song that will come out May 4 called “Just a little.” It gives you a peek into a more personal life. It’s about craving the contrasts in a love/hate relationship. I’m really excited about this one.
The Young Folks: When putting this EP together, what sort of things did you take into consideration?
Hansson: We had a string of songs collected when we started bouncing ideas for this EP. In some way, the songs we picked out had a connection to each other and it just felt meant to be that we would release them as a story. We also wanted to make a visual EP so there is a trailer that will come out soon introducing the characters that play the lead roles in the story. It takes place in a comic book world. We have that concept for all the cover art and in the music videos, it comes to life.

The Young Folks: This isn’t the first time you released music as Violet Days. How has your music evolved over the past year or so?
Hansson: We love to experiment with sounds and constantly grow and do something that we haven’t done before. We will always try to introduce new elements in the sound, and we definitely have been playing around more with that for these new songs.
The Young Folks: Since SXSW is over, what is next for you?
Hansson: Next up is finishing this whole EP and doing some shows around that. We have a show at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC on May 2nd [and] at Schoolnight in LA on May 7th.
The Young Folks: What do you hope to see Violet Days doing by the time 2018 is over?
Hansson: I hope we get to go on some nice tours and connect with more people. Also, I look forward to finishing another EP- I can’t wait to start working on the concept for that.
