Music Interview: Studio Killers

Four years later and “Girl Boss” Cherry, keyboardist Goldie Foxx, and DJ Dyna Mink AKA Studio Killers are back. The European electronic audio-visual collective scored a huge hit in the UK, the Netherlands and Denmark in 2011 with “Ode to the Bouncer” and followed that up in 2013 with their debut self-titled album and the critically acclaimed single “All Men Are Pigs”. Now they’ve sneaked their way back into our eardrums with their latest single, “Party Like It’s Your Birthday.” The video already racked up over one million views on Youtube. It’s like they never left and we’re already ready for more. Better news? They’re ready to give us more music in the future. Read again: this is not the last of Studio Killers. Check out our interview with the trio. If we learned one thing, it’s to make sure to party every day like it’s your birthday.

The Young Folks: First things first, welcome back! It’s been a few years since we heard any new tracks so what motivated you all to come back and release new music?
Cherry, Goldie Foxx, and DJ Dyna Mink: Our fans, of course. We took a short break, but we missed our fans – they are our champions, and we love them. Also, music is in our blood, so we needed to get some music out of our system. We think that the best way for us to communicate with our fans and show our appreciation is through our music, of course.

TYF: What have you all been up to during your mini-hiatus?
Cherry, GF and DM: We’ve actually been working on some top secret non-music related Studio Killers stuff, big ambitions and crazy schemes… We’ve also been honing our skills and finding out what the big bad world is like, traveling here there and everywhere hooking up with new and old friends that we can’t wait to introduce you to!

TYF: How do you think this small break helped you grow as a band, if it has at all?
Cherry: It’s given us a larger perspective on our mission: which is to be the voice for all the underdogs out there, it’s about showing our fans never to give up on your dreams. Also with lots and lots of stuff changing culturally right now, it’s great to have a crew you can huddle together with and eat popcorn. Now that we’re releasing new music, we’re getting ready to jump into the fray of things again.

TYF: With your new track “Party Like It’s Your Birthday”, what’s the story behind this one?
Cherry: This song is about giving yourself a permission to be carefree and have a good time. I think we can all use that, don’t you think? Also, there’s always a special place in our hearts for 80’s funk vibes and feel good party tunes. Always.

TYF: Does this new song necessarily mean we’ll continue to hear more new music in the near future?
Cherry, GF and DM: Absolutely!

TYF: You’re all known for working virtually and even in a previous interview, you mentioned having never really met one another until after some time. Has this or will this change for your new music – will you continue to work face-to-face versus online?
Cherry: We spend most of our time together now, as we all have to share close quarters until we find a way to rule the world. World domination is much trickier than it seems.

TYF: And to keep it in the theme for your new song – when it’s your birthday, how do you normally like to celebrate?
Cherry: It’s quite simple – good friends, great music and a full tank of gas.
