Music Interview: Finneas

Finneas and Billie Ellish = the perfect duo.

Finneas, Billie’s brother, is a renowned songwriter and producer collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry (Khalid, Kehlani, Marian Hill, and, yes, Billie Ellish)! But now, expect to see more of Finneas’ own personal work grabbing new fans. This year alone he’s released his singles “Break My Heart Again” and “College” but there’s much more to come.

If you’re heading to Billie’s 1 By 1 tour, keep an ear out for Finneas who’ll be the opening act and playing alongside her. We had a chance to chat with Finneas while he was rehearsing for the tour. Best of luck, Finneas!

The Young Folks: So bummed I’ll be missing you and your sister on tour. But I’d love to know, what have you been doing to get prepped for this tour?
Finneas: TONS of work on the live show. We really want this tour to be the best it possibly can in every direction. New lights, new songs, new order, it’s all super important to us. I’m at rehearsal right now actually.

TYF: You’ll be playing double duty with opening for Billie and then playing on stage with her. Since you’re stepping into your own spotlight in front of audiences who may or may not heard of you yet, what’s that like for you?
Finneas: Performing with/for Billie is so much fun and I can’t WAIT to open on this run too. She really has the best fans in the world, they’re so kind.

TYF: What are you hoping to accomplish while you’ll be on this tour, if anything?
Finneas: We have an album to finish while we’re on this tour… don’t know how we’re gonna get it all done but we’ll find a way.

TYF: You’ve worked with so many talented people. How did you first get your start in the industry, more so the songwriter/producer side of things?
Finneas: “Ocean Eyes” changed my life. Before that, I’d never made anything anyone gave a shit about. After that, I got to start writing with other people and built a network of friends that way. Favorite thing in the world.

TYF: What then motivated you to step out into your own and release your own songs?
Finneas: I just had so many songs that felt so personal, I couldn’t give them to anyone else. I felt like I was the only person that would want to sing them.

TYF: As a songwriter for yourself and a songwriter for others, how do you go about making sure you’re speaking in the artist’s voice? What are some of your ways to get to really know someone if it’s your first time ever coming across their music?
Finneas: First few hours of almost every session I do with anyone feel more like a therapy session. I just listen and listen and listen and then talk about anything we have in common.

TYF: I just watched your Instagram story with you and Billie. Your guys’ relationship is so great to see. Have you guys always imagined you’d be adults, on tour together with your whole family? Was this always the dream for you?
Finneas: I don’t think we had any idea but it’s all I wanna be doing. Couldn’t imagine a better life.

TYF: Knowing that you come across some great artists, who is one artist you hope to collaborate with or write for in the future?
Finneas: Camilla Cabello would be sick. So would Tom Waits.
