Music Interview: Sam Setton

Recently, we’ve been stuck listening to electro-R&B artist Sam Setton. His sound is a bit reminiscent of the current bedroom pop artists that have seen a wave of support over the last year or so. We’re here for it. From recording a hit Christmas classic at a young age to releasing his own original music, Sam has come a long way. In anticipation of his new track “Hurts So Much,” we took some time to chat with Sam to discuss all about his career. Check it out.

The Young Folks: For all of us getting to know you, can you tell us a bit what sparked an interest in pursuing a career in the music industry? Sam Setton: From as far back as I can remember it’s just always been a dream of mine to create original music that was similar to the music I loved and was obsessed with. I don’t know if I can pinpoint one thing or moment, but I’ve always been interested in the idea of releasing great music and building a fanbase.

TYF: Have you always seen yourself as the vocalist or did you first want to dive into songwriting, producing, etc before stepping into the spotlight?
SS: So I actually started playing guitar when I was 12, the same time as my best friend. We used to jam together covering our favorite songs and he was always too embarrassed to sing so one day he convinced me I had a better voice and should be the one singing. So I did and I haven’t looked back since.

TYF: You’ve been working on music for quite some time. Do you remember what your first ever song was and what it was like for you to put it out into the public?
SS: The first song I ever recorded was a cover of “All I Want For Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey. I remember sending that .mp3 file to everyone on my iChat buddy list and I got some great feedback the next day in high school. It felt really good having something out in public for people to consume.

TYF: Fast forward to now, here you are with one single out and another one on the way in February. How would you say you have grown over the past few years?
SS: I’ve grown as a songwriter and artist overall for sure. I’ve finally found my own sound and I’m running with it.

TYF: As an artist, what else would you want to learn or perfect?
SS: I want to perfect my live performance! I’ve been working on it. For a while now and it’s pretty solid but there’s always room to grow and improve. That’s a priority of mine.

TYF: Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration on your forthcoming single, “Hurts So Much”?
SS: It was inspired by a breakup I went through. It’s told from the perspective of someone who just recently went through a breakup and is caught romanticizing the relationship. They are begging their ex to take them back in order to work on making the relationship better than it ever was.

TYF: With “Gum” to “Hurts So Much”, would you say they are somehow linked to one another? One with so much happiness to the other with the downfall of it all?
SS: YES! I see both songs as mini-stories told from the perspective of someone in a relationship. “Gum” is the feeling when you first start to fall in love and “Hurts So Much” is right when you’ve broken up.

TYF: You’re starting off 2019 so strong. What do you hope to accomplish for the rest of the year?
SS: Thank you! My top goals for 2019 are to continue releasing quality music and to tour, playing shows in as many places as I can. Look out for an announcement soon
