Music Interview: Natti Natasha

Recognized globally as the most watched woman on YouTube with over 4.52 billion views, Dominican singer Natti Natasha is looking to break new ground with the release of her first studio album titled ilumiNATTI. We at the Young Folks had the pleasure of sitting down with Natti for a one on one interview talking all things ilumiNATTI and her climb to super-stardom.

Now while the billions of views and millions of followers, 11.2 million to be exact, may sound great. The success did not happen overnight for Natti Natasha. After making waves with her collaboration with Don Omar for his song Dutty Love in 2012. All signs pointed at Natti becoming the next star within the Urban music genre. But decision makers within the industry had other plans, downplaying Natasha’s talent as they believed women simply couldn’t sell as well as their male contemporaries.

“I always believed in Natti Natasha and what I had to give, with what I love to do which is music… 10 doors said no but there was one that said yes, and that’s the one that helped me get to where I am today.”

When pressed to answer whether or not those doubters fueled her motivation while creating this album. Natasha ambiguously answered “Everything is motivation.”

Now whatever the motivation may have been for Natti, one of the constant themes within this jam packed 17 song album is the empowerment of women. Not only in regards to their strength and presence but in their sexuality and honesty as well.

“Empowerment, women, everything every story told from a woman’s perspective. I think that was very important because women have a lot to say and I feel like this was the moment for me to do that.”

Natasha who is known for her provocative music videos also stepped out of her comfort zone releasing a music video for her single “La Mejor Version De Mi” (or “The Best Version of Me”). Which focused on not only women finding happiness within themselves but also placed a spotlight on Natti Natasha the artist.

“Sometimes I am just not the dancing one, not this, not that, I am just a woman so we go through a lot of different feelings in our lives and that’s another side of me. I appreciate music and I really love the lyrics in the song, seeing that I went out of my comfort zone and seeing that my fans loved it the way they did… it was a very special moment for me.”
