The New One Direction “You & I” Music Video Rules

The new One Direction video is awesome. There’s not much more to say other than that. We live in a Katy Perry fueled music video world where if there aren’t four costume changes and if it’s not set in Ancient Egypt then why would you even make a music video? Every music video is completely over the top all the way from thumping David Guetta beats to swinging naked on a wrecking ball. Don’t get me wrong, I love the big productions but I also love subdued love ballads in the English countryside. More importantly, I love watching Harry Styles flip his hair and turn into Zayn Malik. God, I love that so much. I could watch that over and over again for the rest of my life. I love the simplicity. I love that for most of the video we only see one boy on the windswept English dock (where Harry Styles and I will no doubt fall in love on one fateful overcast day). I love the stop motion where each guy literally jumps into his future action. I love the easy chemistry between the band when they do share the screen together. I love all the sweaters. I love this absurd close-up of Harry: I love that there is no girl in this music video for a love song. The whole conceit of One Direction (and most other boy bands) is you, the fan, is their significant other. They’re talking to you. Because the you and “You & I” — that is you. Sigh. I love One Direction.
