Pop-rock quartet Neon Trees has been working hard to keep up their current momentum. The release of their newest album Pop Psychology this past Tuesday came with a new music video for the single “First Things First.” At first the song comes across as a chill, upbeat pop track—the driving beat is an 80’s style synth chord that opens to a rock guitar solo in the bridge. After multiple listens with closer attention to the lyrics, the melancholy of the verses became evident. One of the prevalent themes is how the fame of the band isn’t as important as actually being in the band. It’s a lovely sentiment, but since I’ve seen more media coverage than ever for this particular Neon Trees album, it also ends up being unintentionally ironic.
The music video speaks perfectly to the solemn, retrospective nature of the song. Opening with the band members dressed in all white against white screens, the video features projections of the band’s early concert footage and pictures from various events in their lives. The video has skipping and static effects that enhance the home movie vibes. The simplicity of this video serves to make the song’s message more poignant.
