Upcoming Artists: Circa Waves

Circa Waves

From Liverpool, the city known as the World Capital of Pop, where bands such as The Beatles, The Zutons, Echo and the Bunnymen and even A Flock of Seagulls came to first be, comes a new and upbeat quartet that I just can’t stop listening to. Their name? Circa Waves.

The band – consisting in lead vocalist Keiran Shuddal, guitarist Joe Falconer, drummer Sian Plummer and bassist Sam Rourke – formed in May 2013 and has a very strong garage indie-rock-post-punk vibe that resembles to that early 2000’s sound back in the times of a very young The Strokes, The Vines, Arctic Monkeys and The Libertines. Their debut single, the energetic double track “Get Away”/”Good For Me“, was released back on December and since then, all the praise and buzz began in Britain.

The guys have been a band for a little over a year now, and frankly, they are not doing bad. Shuddal was member of a few groups, but never really quite made it there. He decided it was time for a change. “I didn’t used to be as determined as I am now to write songs and make a really good band,” said the 26-year old singer in an interview. “I told myself that I either had to get a real job or give music a proper go and try and make it a success.” Well, looks like he made it. Since then, he has written a set of new songs, published a few demos/singles and is ready – alongside bandmates – to make an album. They are receiving a lot of good reviews in the UK, so I don’t doubt we’ll be hearing a lot more about them soon in the U.S and rest of the world.

One of their songs I bumped into recently is “Know One“, a small demo filled with a set of melodic guitar riffs the band posted a little over a month ago. One of those songs you can’t stop playing over and over again.

After a short tour in the UK and Europe, Circa Waves is currently working on their debut album, so hopefully we’ll get more new music from them in a few more months. One thing for sure: They have officially become one of the bands to look for this year in my book. In a recent interview done by British magazine  NME, Falconer mentions that their debut material will have “lots of energy, loads of chords, loads of loud guitars and distortion.” Nice.
