Music News: Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” is a Solid Summer Track

A great pop song can be hard to find. Luckily for me, a song by debut artist Meghan Trainor was presented to me on a silver platter by several people I follow on Twitter. “All About That Bass,” a ridiculously catchy spiritual successor to Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious,” has been steadily gaining notoriety over the past few weeks with its bright hooks and doo-wop sound. The message of the song isn’t new—it’s about how you’re perfect just the way you are and anyone that doesn’t agree can essentially go to hell—but its healthy dose of attitude and retro sound set it apart.

The catchiness comes from the chorus’s simplicity—it only consists of one line: “You know I’m all about that bass, ‘bout that bass, no treble.” Within the song, Trainor continues the awesome recent trend of celebrities calling out the magazine industry (“I see the magazines working that Photoshop/You know that shit ain’t real, come on now make it stop”). The song is positive, empowering, and vibrant.

“All About That Bass” received some flack for skinny shaming, particularly in the comments on the YouTube video. I don’t think that’s the song’s intent at all—it’s more about being confortable with not fitting into society’s beauty standards represented. She refuses to be anything but genuine, and since she doesn’t naturally look like a Barbie doll, she’s not going to force herself to do so.
