Artist Profile: Watch The Duck

The prospects of any artist should be two of three things, uniqueness and the quality of their engineering. One thing that is evident in the generalized electronic music genre is the engineering, but when it comes to uniqueness, these artists only implement vocals and the drop primarily, and that’s from countless listens of different artists. Dub-step is a genre that blew up after the house music genre was in, and clearly it has a right to be, cause Dub-step is all about the bass and the kicks/snares. Before I heard of Watch the Duck, I was getting used to this style from SBTKRT, a London-based electronic artist that mixes soul and R&B with Dub-step and trance.

Clearly, soul is vocalized in different ways, most ways are danceable and sometimes it can sound on some real shit. It really depends on the speed of the singing. What first introduced me to this group from Atlanta was their track “FreedomVille (Anatidaephobia Part 1).” Anatidaephobia is described as an irrational fear that a duck is watching you. “FreedomVille,” is trance-like at first with its use of hi-hats and claps over a piano loop. It’s audibly toxic. The drop is intense and subtle, so when it goes in, it goes in. Check the track below.

Another track off their 2013 EP, Anatidaephobia, is “Girlfriend,” is probably one of my all time favorites. The nature of the track is about a girl acting like she wants to be Jesse’s boo, making him do things that a man would do after a few months, but in the end, she’s just tripping. The song is an excellent club-banger as well as very poignant track that perfectly demonstrates who they are as an artist. This track has more of a natural trance vibe to it. Here it is bellow.

A year later, they worked with the likes of T.I. (duh) and Iggy Azalea (those features had wicked beats), as well as releasing a free mixtape Don’t Watch Me. The tape is dope, and well rounded with different sounding tracks but remaining the element that this is a pure electronic album. The mixtape features the likes of Trae the Truth, Busta Rhymes, the remix to “Girlfriend,” and a song written by Cee-Lo, if that means anything to you. It’s free on soundcloud too so don’t forget to cop that album.
