Music news: Childish Gambino teases PHAROS

If you’re a big Childish Gambino fan, you’re wondering where he’s been. Of course we’ve seen him in The Martian in his short but amazing performance, and he’s also staring in a new FX television series Atlanta that debuts in September, but that’s portrayed by Donald Glover. Childish has been radio silence. We’ve been wondering if he’s ever going to drop another album or if he’s just done with his music career.

Well, our wondering is over; on June 17 he tweeted for the first time with a link to a free mobile app called PHAROS.

The app showed a countdown along with an unidentified object flying through space. Choral music played in the background that resembled something a lot like a Gambino record. Once the countdown ended, that unidentified object plowed into earth and revealed a trio of West Coast shows in Joshua Tree, California on Sept. 2, 3 and 4. Is this the works of a new album coming soon?

More information about the event surfaced when $99 dollar tickets went on pre-sale on June 24 at 9 a.m. PT with options for on-site camping and more. Gambino tweeted that these performances would be the only performances in 2016.

The ones who purchased the tickets through the app received a digital guidebook; a twelve-slide scroll screen. A few pages of the guidebook can be seen below. To see the rest of the images and slides, head over to Alex Sibert’s article on Pigeons and Planes.

The upcoming LP serves as the follow-up to 2013’s Grammy-nominated Because the Internet, which housed the hits “V. 3005” and “I. Crawl.”
