The Gorillaz are back!
On January 19, the Gorillaz released their first song in six years, “Hallelujah Money” featuring British artist Benjamin Clementine, the day before Donald Trump’s Inauguration.
The song explores themes of “power, big business, and humanity,” according to a press release. The band shared the new song on twitter, with a message referencing the current political climate and teasing more new music.
“In these dark times, we all need someone to look up to. Me,” said bassist Murdoc. “That’s why I’m giving you this new Gorillaz song, a lightning bolt of truth in a black night. You’re welcome. Now piss on! The new album’s not gonna write itself.”
Gorillaz were created in 1998 by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett, and have sold over 15 million copies of their four albums. Clementine released his debut album, At Least for Now, in 2015 and it subsequently won that year’s Mercury Music Prize.
