Feature: Starling Glow

Starling Glow is an up-and-coming band, whose music has blends of pop, indie, rock, and dance. Its hit single, “We Are Infinite,” premiered on the Top 20 Billboard Dance Charts. The band is fronted by Liz Anne Hill, who is the lead singer and songwriter. Liz has a wide range of musical influences, which explains how her sound is different from others.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Liz and learning more about her and the band. You can check out the interview below.

TYF: Where did the name “Starling Glow” come from?
Liz Anne Hill: My producer’s wife actually suggested it – a starling is a songbird, which felt really fitting. Glow came not only from the birds’ stunning colors but also from the idea that this is my chance to shine.

TYF: Can you describe your current album in three words?
Hill: Empowering, unapologetic, and fun.

TYF: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would you pick and why?
Hill: I have looked up to Shakira since I was a little girl and my sister gave me “Laundry Service”.  Her music not only inspired me as a singer, but to learn Spanish. (I actually have my bachelor’s degree in Spanish, haha). Maybe one day we can do a bilingual duet!

TYF: What are some of your favorite moments from the past shows you have done?
Hill: In San Francisco, I played a late-night club show and somehow ended up in the middle of the crowd having an interpretative dance-off with everyone on the dance floor! (Regrettably, as I am a terrible dancer, I lost the dance battle).

My most memorable show was for sure in New Jersey – every single person I met was SO nice! I must have met at least 300 people in the meet and greet, we laughed and took silly pictures and shared stories – I swear my face hurt from smiling the whole next day, but it was so worth it!

I think my least favorite, but nonetheless, memorable moment was getting lost on the way to my last show in Vegas, ending up in some sketchy back alley getting interrogated by cops!

TYF: Before a show, do you have any pre-show rituals?
Hill: I HAVE to stretch – especially for a full band show, stretching my legs, back, arms and neck are so important to prevent the ever dreaded bang-over (aka next-day soreness after rocking out too hard). I always warm up my voice too, the choruses and bridges are pretty high and demanding in a lot of the tunes.

TYF: Will you be touring soon?
Hill: Yes, and I can’t WAIT!  My priority is to finish the album to release in early 2015, then get on the road.

TYF: Do you have a dream venue that you want to play in one day?
Hill: I am from Orange County, and there’s no bigger venue in OC than the Honda Center.  Hometown shows always mean a lot to any musician, and one day, I hope to hear my voice echoing over the crowd in that arena.

TYF: Other than playing music, what do you like to do during your free time?
Hill: Anyone who follows my social media knows that I’m a horse fanatic, haha. My horse Cairo is my BFF and see him every day that I’m in town. I’m a total outdoors kid, and I love to go hiking or for runs. Also, I really love food. Eating counts as a pastime, right?

TYF: What can we expect from you in the near future?
Hill: I’ll be shooting the music for our second single, “Ignite”, and we will be releasing both the song and the video soon!  It’s a really empowering and energetic song – I can’t wait to get it out!

TYF: Where can fans and other music lovers find you?
Hill: You can visit my website and Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook pages.
