Nintendo Ventures to Winterlands with Zelda Escape Room

If Hyrule happens to be on your list of fantasy worlds you’d most want to visit, you’re in luck.

In conjunction with the release of Breath of the Wild last month, Nintendo has been touring a brand new Legend of Zelda Escape room across North America. Originally licensed and created by SCRAP Entertainment, the company is collaborating with local branches of escape room production, such as Real Escape Game and Secret City Adventures, to expand the tour stops for fans. The tour initially only covered major American stops, with Seattle, Los Angeles and Chicago being treated to the Zelda escape room experience earlier this year, but Canadian cities have been added to the tour throughout the upcoming summer.

The Legend of Zelda: Defenders of the TriForce is an interactive game experience where participants get to become the next heroes of Hyrule. With a time limit bearing down, the teams of heroes must solve a series of puzzles in order to find the Master Sword and save the land from being covered in eternal darkness. For the uninitiated, Escape Rooms are a recent entertainment trend that use theatricality to create interactive, real-world gaming experiences. Participants are usually locked in a room and tasked with an objective to achieve within a time limit. No phones and minimal outside help are permitted – it’s just you, your brainpower and a gang of other people to work with. Typically, escaping is the goal, but there are twists on the format where other endgames are implemented.

Nintendo’s tight-donning hero also isn’t the first pop culture license to foray into the booming escape room business – the Resident Evil franchise ran an escape room in Japan and the United States earlier this year, and Toronto boasted a Murdoch Mysteries-themed room set in a real, turn-of-the-century historical house.

Still, we’d be remiss if we didn’t admit that the Zelda escape room made us ready to put on our little green hats and go break some clay pots.

Defenders of the TriForce will be in New York from May 4 – 7, before heading to its first Canadian stop in Toronto for May 10 – 14. Stops are also scheduled in Montreal, Ottawa, and more. Further tour details and tickets are available on the official website.
