Bye, good grades: ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ unveil new gameplay

Great, how are some of us supposed to focus on school now?

Marvel’s Spider-Man and Cyberpunk 2077 — also known as two of the year’s buzziest releases — have new footage to show. Hope you’re done with classes before watching them, otherwise all that will be on your mind for the day are the games, the games and the games.

What’s in the latest promo piece for Insomniac’s take on the webslinger is an amalgam of all the playthroughs we’ve seen – free-roaming, prison break, bank robbery, Silver Sable, etc. — framed as a new episode of the radio show Just the Facts, or when J. Jonah Jameson hosts Tami’s Final Thoughts. Pretending to be a citizen named Ben Reilly (a nod to Scarlet Spider), Peter Parker politely spars with Jameson about his superhero persona, allowing the angry editor to reference all the villains, allies and the existence of a collision course in the game’s narrative.

James Stevenson, Insomniac’s community director, answered fans’ questions on Twitter on Sunday. He said that the game will take “around 20 hours on default difficulty” without completing the side missions and will use up “45 GB minimum” of your PS4’s hard drive.

He has also been a real class act in explaining to those who @ him with cries of downgrade. You go, James.

The game will be in your neighborhood Sept. 7. Sorry Assignment #1, it’s not you, it’s me.

Ticket to ‘2077,’ please

Later, release date-wise — “TBA” if we’re being specific — is CD Projekt Red’s post-Witcher venture. As if the pain from waiting for the game after watching 48 minutes of its previously closed-doors, madly immersive and ambitious E3 2018 demo will be less severe…

Well, at least there’s footage to pass the time.

In this hyper-violent blend of Deus Ex, Grand Theft Auto, Crysis, Dishonored and Blade Runner, first announced in 2012, you will embody V, a mercenary whose appearance and skills can be customized to survive in in the dangerous Night City of the Free State of Northern California. This is an adaptation of the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020.

As noted and oft-emphasized in the footage, the game is a work-in-progress. Let’s just hope that will be enough to spare the Polish game developer from any bout of downgrade-glazed hellfire similar to the past (“Maybe we shouldn’t have shown that [Witcher 3 PC trailer],” cofounder Marcin Iwinski said to Eurogamer in 2015) and what Insomniac is currently dealing with (on that note, one of the quests shown will have you obtaining a spiderbot *winks*).

“Since many of the assets and mechanics in the current version of Cyberpunk 2077 are most likely to be modified, we initially decided to show this gameplay only to media,” said Adam Badowski in a press release. “Elements like gunplay (both in terms of visuals and how RPG stats influence it), netrunning, car physics, or the game’s UI — everything’s pretty much still in the playtest phase and we felt uneasy about publicly committing to any particular design. Animation glitches, work-in-progress character facial expressions, early versions of locations — all this made us hesitant to release what you’re about to see.”
