Who loves a little news about Batman? I know I do.
Time Warner gave a hint at what they might have coming up in the next year after reviewing their estimated profits from 2012, all of which was lovingly transcribed for us by Yahoo! Finance.
Most of the presentation by the CFO and Chief Administrative Officer, John K Martin, involved a lot of financial jargon and name dropping a lot of their big names in television and film (The Hobbit, Man of Steel, The Hangover, etc.), among which was a note about what the company has lined up in the world of gaming:
“And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise. So all in all, we expect Warner to post another very strong year in 2013. And with a little luck, the year should be as good or maybe even a little bit better than 2012.”
Since this announcement was made, the rumor was recently circling around the net that Rocksteady, the developer behind the series predecessors Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, would not be involved with the creation of the third game in the franchise.
A few days before, Warner also recently took out domain names including Batman Arkham Rises, Batman Arkham Knight, Batman Arkham Universe and … DC Arkhamverse? Really guys?
Arkham Asylum’s multi-platform release in 2009 was a third person action-adventure stealth game that reunited the cast of Batman The Animated Series for the voices of Bruce Wayne, the Joker and Commissioner Gordon, and was the first major release from London based developer Rocksteady. In fall of 2011, Rocksteady and Warner released a sequel. Arkham City refined the gameplay, made an even better story and an open world Gotham for players to fly around, beat up crooks and throw battarangs at their leisure. Arkham City ended up on several “Best Of 2011” lists, and the Batman Arkham series is, to date, the most critically acclaimed superhero franchise ever created.
What do you guys think? Is it really going to be called DC Arkhamverse? (Blegh) Will Rocksteady return for a third installment? If not, what other developers would you like to see come in and change up the franchise?
