E3 2016: Sony Press Conference

Sony had a great presentation at this year’s conference presenting tons of new games. They had a fantastic mix of old and new properties and even took some time to show their commitment to Playstation VR. Take a scroll through the list and check out our favorite highlights from Sony’s press conference!

Sony kicked things off by bringing a beloved franchise roaring back onto the scene with a gameplay trailer for a new God of War. I dig the new, old, bearded Kratos and the transition to Norse mythology from the previous exploration of Greek gods and myths. An even bigger change than the setting is the style of gameplay, with the new game making the switch to a more modern third-person perspective. There have been some great third-person action titles in recent years. Sony Santa Monica certainly have their work cut out for them but the small slice of playtime we saw seems to bode well for the game. What really piqued my interested more than the gameplay, was the potential themes the game could explore by putting Kratos in a very different situation.

The first new property to get a major announcement was Days Gone from SIE Bend studio. I wasn’t entirely sure how to digest Days Gone. On one hand it feels like a retread of previous settings and ideas. Post apocalyptic setting? Check. Zombies? Check. Grizzled and cynical white dude for a main character? Check. Honestly for a quick second I thought we were getting an announcement for The Last of Us 2. The minor twist is that we seem to be dealing with World War Z style fast zombies and the game seems to be taking advantage of the current gen’s power to generate some truly large zombie hordes. Whether the game can do enough to really stand out remains to be seen.

Another title I had a mixed reaction to was Detroit: Become Human, the newest title from developer Quantic Dream. David Cage and his studio always swing for the fences and I really appreciate that. Heavy Rain was a home run, but Beyond: Two Souls was a double at best. I love games with multiple paths and endings so I’m kind of a sucker for what this game is promising. Let’s hope it can deliver on that promise.

An old new face returned to the E3 stage when Sony gave us another look at Horizon Zero Dawn. I continue to be excited about this game for reasons I can’t entirely explain. Something about the combination of the aesthetic with the deliberate combat continues to reel me in. I wasn’t fully hooked by the combat system of The Witcher series because I just don’t have the patience that system requires. Horizon feels like a more action oriented version of that combat system. On top of that, the game looks gorgeous. Why not get excited?

Another well known property hoping to make a successful jump to the current generation is Resident Evil the confusingly subtitled Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. After the last two mainline games in the franchise disappointed it seems like Capcom is looking to get back to the roots of the series. It seems like some serious changes are coming with first person view and VR support. I’ve never been the biggest Resident Evil fan but this could pull me in.

This brings me to the next series of announcements which I’m calling The Teases. These are the games that certainly caught my eye but that were only teased briefly.

The Last Guardian! With an official release date! October 26th! This year! That’s pretty much all we need to know.

Spider-Man! Brand new game! From Ratchet and Clank and Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac Games! New hype level reached!

Just when I think I’m out of the Batman: Arkham games they pull me back in. If you want to bring people to your VR platform, Batman is a great way to start.

While this could totally could have fit into the last section I have to reserve a page for the triumphant return of Hideo Kojima. The man with a brand new studio dropped a cryptic and weird and unsettling teaser for his new game Death Stranding starring Norman Reedus. I’m sure anyone who was excited by the P.T. teaser is on board for this game. Personally as a fan of Kojima’s previous work I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this one.
