First Dunkirk Trailer Reminds Us It’s Definitely a Christopher Nolan Film

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a Christopher Nolan film. Interstellar released two years ago, and since then, any news surrounding Dunkirk always felt overshadowed by other entertainment announcements. But this morning, the first trailer for Dunkirk dropped. Though it’s not the genre flare Nolan has been known for in the past, this trailer certainly feels like a Nolan film. I’m totally okay with this.

I’m no history buff, so I’ll just leave the IMDB synopsis for you here:

Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada and France are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.

This is the first movie by Christopher Nolan to be based on historical events. As a huge Chris Nolan fan, I’m glad to see him branching out. Despite not being the biggest fan of Interstellar‘s big ideas surrounded by an even bigger scope,Dunkirk‘s realistic setting could be the perfect place for Nolan to explore big ideas such as hope and survival, as the trailer points out.

It’s a chilling first look, for sure. I’m already hooked, and if you are too, I would avoid any subsequent trailers.

The film stars some of the usual Chris Nolan crowd — Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, with Hans Zimmer scoring the music. Others include Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and James D’Arcy. And, lest we forget, Dunkirk will be One Direction’s Harry Styles’ debut film.

Dunkirk hits theaters July 21, 2017.
