After an unexpected leak, Ubisoft recently announced two more games joining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The first game is an HD port of their earlier Vita title, Assassin’s Creed: Liberation. This game stars Aveline de Grandpré, the first female assassin in the series. The second game is simply titled, “Assassin’s Creed: Pirates,” and is an app for tablets and mobile phones. This may come as a surprise considering Ubisoft’s other less-than-stellar adaptations of some of their previous console installments, developed by mobile developer Gameloft.
More Assassin’s Creed might not seem like a bad thing, but Ubisoft might run the risk of burning out the franchise among consumers. I for one am still not quite sold on the idea of yearly iterations. The things that made me fall in love with the franchise were the drastic improvements from the first game to the second. Even going from AC2 to Brotherhood wasn’t that bad. I don’t know if Assassin’s Creed is a franchise that is capable of redefining itself year after year, at least to the point of convincing gamers to fork out 60 bucks every single time. The good thing about these recently announced titles is that neither of them are full experiences. I expect Pirates to cost no more than the average premium app and Liberation HD to cost no more than the average HD port. Only time will tell if AC fans are willing to fill the shoes of three different assassins within a just few months of each other.
Assassin’s Creed: Liberation HD will be released as a digital exclusive on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC in early 2014. Assassin’s Creed: Pirates, however, will be hitting the app stores later this year on unspecified platforms. Love it or hate it, there’s going to be plenty of Assassin’s Creed to go around in the very near future.
