If Legends of Tomorrow keeps going this way, then the season finale will surely deliver. “Fellowship of the Spear” had all the makings of a great episode and really found a way to coordinate everything from the action to furthering the plot, and all without neglecting the fantastic character tension that was provided.
The spear of destiny
We’ve been hearing about the spear of destiny for what feels like most of the season, with the mission changing from finding and fixing time aberrations to seeking out the separated pieces of the spear. With one final piece left to get, the Legends find themselves back at the Vanishing Point, bypassing the Legion of Doom, who have been hiding out there. With all the pieces back together, Rip informs the team that the artifact is so powerful that it’ll prey on the weaknesses and desires of everyone in order to get them to use it.
The plot, which involves finding J.R.R. Tolkien and the blood of Jesus Christ, is outlandishly ridiculous, right up until the final scene with the Legion using the “word of God” (which feels like a page taken out of a Supernatural script). Regardless, it works for the show. “Fellowship of the Spear” is a tightly woven episode and takes everything to the next level. Legends of Tomorrow even found a way to bring back Captain Cold just in time for Mick’s uncertainty with the team’s distrust toward him to come to a head, leaving the Legends at a loss of both the spear and a team member.
With power comes great responsibility
The episode tackled some great discussions. By bringing the pieces of the spear of destiny together, the team began to fall apart. Amaya, having seen her future, fought against destroying the spear. In the right hands, she says, they can change the future for the better. Why allow the Legion to use it and not take advantage of the spear’s powers to rewrite reality? So affected by what she saw, I wonder if Amaya will end up taking things into her own hands at some point. She was distraught and, while usually the sense of reason, was desperate enough to want to use the spear for her own personal gain, believing it to be for the greater good. I have enjoyed how the show has been developing her and bringing her further into the fabric of the season’s storyline. It’s made for some great viewing and brought about a strong addition to the cast in Amaya’s presence on the team.
Equally fascinating was the journey Mick has taken. The hallucinations of Captain Cold never really made sense to me. They always felt like a reason to try and make use of Wentworth Miller, but they most definitely worked here. Cold continued messing with Mick’s head, making him doubt what he was doing, his place on the team, and whether or not the Legends really trusted him. For a character whose first instinct is to cause mayhem, seeing him be affected by the team’s deep-rooted opinions of him stung. His betrayal hurt, but it also didn’t come out of nowhere.
“Fellowship of the Spear” showcased a lot of maturity for the show. The team, after finally feeling like a unit the last several episodes, is rightfully fractured and this sets up the final episodes in a great way. I’m positive Mick will find his way back, at least to a certain degree, and that Amaya will figure out how she’ll want to proceed moving forward. I commend the show for shaking things up a bit and the writers’ willingness to change up the team’s dynamic, if only for a little while. The episode was a solid hour of entertainment, action, and great plot development towards a finale that will have the Legends facing the consequences of everything they’ve been coming up against.
