This week’s episode of The Originals delves into Vincent’s past, his connection to a terrifying new threat and, of course, in “Haunter of Ruins” we finally get a look at Daddy Klaus.
In fact, those moments with Klaus and little Hope were the strongest scenes in the episode between picnic water color painting to Hope revealing to her father that she has healing powers via a blue butterfly with the broken wing. At first I was skeptical about the casting for Hope, but her and Joseph Morgan have dynamite father/daughter chemistry on screen.
There’s trouble brewing in the air though, in the form of a mysterious blue glow thanks to Vincent who’s past is hurtling back to the present. His wife Eva, remember her? The baby-napper? Well it turns out that before all the drama with Klaus started, Vincent wanted to protect New Orleans and make it the perfect place to raise their unborn child. Eva went too far though from sacrificing her pet bird to other people’s children.
Eventually Eva is consumed by her demons, and no one knows what happened to her and Vincent’s unborn child.
Vincent isn’t going to let the darkness win this time though. Him and Marcel find the blinged-out man behind the kidnappings who looks like he belongs at a rock concert, I guess that’s the new “sacrificial” look. After the tussle they take him out, the children are cold though with blood dripping from their noses. They’re bound to the spell through a table of scattered objects that belong to the children, one of those objects happen to be Hope’s hairbrush.
Back at the Miklaeson’s abode Hope is experiencing the same symptoms as the other children. Marcel, being totally not heartless, allows Vincent to message Hayley about bringing Hope to New Orleans to be cured despite the looming threat of Marcel.
The other children are still in danger, or are they now safe? We don’t really know with the episode ending with Will, remember Will? The detective who was bff’s with Cami? He’s waiting in the middle of the road and slits the ambulance driver’s throat and drives off with the children.
I have a feeling things aren’t going to end well for those kids, it’s not the Julie Plec way.

What about the other Miklaesons? Well Freya was portrayed as the villain of the episode after getting in a fight with Hayley about the werewolf girl they are holding captive in their shed chained up in the most uncomfortable position imaginable (is that a giant lawnmower she’s stuck too?) Hayley wants to set her free with a blessing from Elijah, but Freya isn’t having it and ends up tracking the girl back down and dragging her back to the shed without the rest of her siblings knowing. If there’s anything The Originals and The Vampire Diaries have taught me is don’t keep secrets from your allies. Odds are Freya’s business with this werewolf girl, finding a cure for Marcel’s bite and killing him, is not going to end well for anyone involved.
Kol and Rebecka have their own plans too. It’s unclear whether or not Rebecka or Kol will have major roles this season, but I have a feeling we won’t be seeing them much as they begin their blood-induced quest to find true love.
Oh, and we can’t end this review without giving a shout-out to that smoking-hot Elijah and Hayley sex scene. Sigh, maybe Klaus will find love like that again (Caroline? Where are you?)
