The season 4 finale of Sleepy Hollow wrapped up many of it’s loose ends in “Freedom” and whether or not we’re getting another season, I have to say that I’m fairly satisfied with how this so-so season has concluded.
The episode starts off with our resident demon Jobe giving Crane and Lara a hint that they may be able to free Dreyfuss from his deal with the devil and slash his immortality if they speak to the man himself. Of course that’s what Crane and Lara do, no questions asked as they are pulled into their own separate versions of hell. For Crane is war, for Lara it’s her time spent in a orphanage after her mother Diana became the horseman of war in her timeline.
Once they walk through the gates it’s exactly what we expect hell to look like; a chrome corporate office with never-ending spiral staircases and sky-high elevators. The devil himself was an interesting character even though we didn’t see much of him after Crane made a deal that’s not revealed until the end of the episode to set Dreyfuss’ soul free.
Meanwhile team witness prepares for battle against the newly released horsemen of the apocalypse with the help from the original members of the agency with magical weapons hidden in the Agency. They split up with Crane and Diana going after Dreyfuss, who is holding the POTUS hostage, and the rest of the gang Jake, Alex, Jenny and Lara taking on the horsemen with their, somewhat crude, but effective weapons.
It’s not easy for Crane and Diana though because they have Henry, who seems to have lost his mind at this point, as Dreyfuss’ guard dog. Crane can see through the horseman though and is able to convince Henry to let they through because of their shared love of American freedom.
The whole scene was a bit strange and really didn’t make sense for me. Henry seemed to be totally over his father, even a bit mad, but yet Crane still broke through to him somehow and the show writers just threw him to the sidelines, yet again.
So if Sleepy Hollow continues nest fall, please show writers just end the Henry plot already. The father/son drama between the two is frankly starting to get old.
But back to Crane, they easily take down Dreyfuss by having a piece of the Philosopher’s Stone, acquired by his deal with the devil, with help from Jobe who was just so over his being babysitter. With Dreyfuss gone, the horsemen also vanish leaving team witness victorious.

Not without a price though, Crane is marked and has sold his soul to the devil. Lara feels that it’s best not to meet Molly and goes off to travel the world leaving our two witnesses, yet again, split up. There’s some happiness though; Jake and Alex are officially a couple and Crane and Diana are still going to be partners in crime fighting all things supernatural and strange.
I have to say the highlight of the episode, even the highlight of the season I would say, was that final AC/DC “Highway to Hell” scene with the ginormous kraken in the local lake.
So should Sleepy Hollow end? Yeah probably. I would be totally satisfied with this final moment being the last time we see Crane and the gang. As much as it’s sad to see a once great show kick the bucket, I think it’s time Crane stayed buried six feet under.
