Things came ahead in this week’s episode of The Originals “High Water and a Devil’s Daughter” with Marcel admitting his true feelings about his former father-figure Klaus, a new relationship blossoming and an unlikely friendship formed.
Starting with Klaus and Marcel, the on again off again bromance, has finally reached its tipping point this week when Klaus’ daughter Hope finds Marcel’s old solider figurine in the Mikaelson estates’ attic. She asks Klaus if a little boy used to live here, that little boy being Marcel. He doesn’t give her a straight answer, but Hope isn’t stupid, she’s seven.
She finds her way to the basement where Marcel is being held against his will and the two form an unlikely friendship that ends up saving Hope’s life by the end of the episode when Dominic escapes Freya’s (not so well thought out) trap and heads to the Mikaelson’s to slaughter them all as a sacrifice to the Hollow.
Marcel manages to convince Hope to free him, but not before we get the big takeaway from the episode: Hope is more powerful than anyone thinks, including her own parents.
It’s not very surprising that Hayley and Klaus have no clue of the power residing in little Hope, they did manage to not realize that she was in the basement with Klaus’ latest enemy after all.
The next big takeaway from this week: Marcel loves Klaus, and he will always love Klaus no matter what the original vampire does to him. It’s a sweet moment between Marcel and Hope (if only Klaus was there!) and at the end of the episode, after Klaus learns that Marcel told Hope to “close her eyes and sing” while he slaughters Dom’s goons, he finally is able to come to a truce with the man he once called a son.
Good, we like it when Klaus and Marcel are on the same side because their fighting, while it’s totally reasonable, is so annoying when it comes to watching it get dragged out episode after episode, week after week, and season after season.
Meanwhile, Freya and Keelin make huge steps in their relationship: their strange kidnapping-based relationship has now turned into a full-blown love affair.

In terms of Freya’s development as a character, I have to say I’m loving where they are taking her. She was always on the sidelines and branded as another sibling who would do anything to protect her family. Now, she’s got some depth to her. She’s running one hundred miles an hour twenty-four seven to protect the family she only met, what? Two season’s ago? Her heart literally stopped and the first thing she thought of was how quickly she could get to her family before Dom slaughtered them.
Like Freya said: she’s ruthless. Which is why she makes much a good match for Keelin, who seems to just go with the flow when things go south.
Our last character pair this week’s episode focused on was Vincent and Elijah, and boy, does Elijah have some explaining to do. Instead of being, well, logical after Vincent refused to sacrifice four girls to the ancestors to gain an ally against the Hollow, he goes ahead and slits the throats for four girls in the graveyard. Vincent is so done with this family. He does some quick thinking though and calls on the powers of an old dead friend.
Welcome back to The Originals, Davina; it’s been too long. She becomes a gatekeeper to the other side and brings the girls back to life, and in the promo, we actually get to see her back on the show in the flesh. It is good news for the gang, because the Hollow has taken over Sofia’s body during the end of the episode.
