TV Review: Better Call Saul 3×06 “Off Brand”

After last week’s jaw-dropping Chuck revelation, this week’s Better Call Saul episode “Off Brand” starts off with Hector sipping tea and watching his goonie Nacho beat up some guy who has done him wrong in a restaurant.

On another note, we were finally introduced to the main character: Saul Goodman.

Jimmy McGill, on the other hand, is on a one-year suspension after Kim bears her soul to the judge trying to prove his innocence. Jimmy and Kim’s cuddle time (finally!) gets cut short by Chuck’s ex-wife Rebecca, who can’t get into Chuck’s home and asks Jimmy for help.

His response: “Yeah…no.”

Which we totally understand. I mean, Chuck has been a pretty horrible brother, but so has Jimmy…so who’s in the wrong? Rebecca tells Jimmy that he has to help Chuck because he’s his brother and because he has a mental illness, but at this point could their relationship ever be repaired? We don’t think so, especially considering Jimmy has to call all those people to let them know he’s going to be out of commission for a year.

Fun Fact: Jimmy has a cute pet office goldfish, and it’s just too cute and too much for my fish-loving heart.

The bright side? Jimmy was reminded to pull that TV ad from the air. The down side? Kim wants to fire poor Francesca, oh and  she wants to sell the office for a smaller place. Jimmy won’t give in though, he agrees to pay his half until he can’t anymore in order to keep the place up and running.

Well, it doesn’t seem like Jimmy’s doing a great job considering he’s trying to make $4,900 by selling his air-time and making a commercial all by 3:20pm that afternoon to a carpet store. Let’s just say the short notice wasn’t flying for the rug sales people. Jimmy’s rag-tag group of college film-makers give him a brilliant idea though, why doesn’t he just make commercial for making a commercial? It sounds confusing, but think of it this way, “for a limited time only, we’ll make your commercial for only $4,900!”

Meanwhile, Gus is window shopping for the perfect meth factory with Breaking Bad’s  Lydia, if you thought she looked familiar, and Chuck is wandering the streets under neon lights wearing tinfoil trying to call his former doctor.

Chuck isn’t the most cringe-worthy moment this week. It’s the horrendous commercial Jimmy conjures up that introduces us to Saul Goodman.

But does it really matter? It’s just a name, right?
