This week’s episode pulls a Freaky Friday between Magnus and Valentine. The switch actually worked for the two characters. While Magnus’s sudden adeptness at magic felt a little odd, it was interesting to see Valentine in his shoes. His whole demeanor was stiff and serious. The complete opposite of what we’re used to from Magnus. Valentine also had a small, but powerful line when he told Jace that it was nice that he was being looked at as a friend for once even if it was for a moment. When he does things like that you almost want to feel bad for the guy, but then he does something evil and it quickly fades. Shoutout to Alan Van Sprang for really portraying Magnus trapped in Valentine’s body. He never pulled me out of the character, especially they way he said “Alexander,” I completely believed he was Magnus, which made me feel bad for when he was getting tortured. No one should have to go through that and unfortunately this warlock did. He had to relive memories that he’d tried to bury. There’s nothing like seeing a man cry for his mother.
As a viewer, it was rough watching Alec tangle with whether or not his boyfriend was trapped in the enemy’s body. It appeared that he wanted to believe him in the beginning, but Valentine is so tricky that it could’ve all been a ploy. Luckily he was able to save Magnus, but the question is whether he’ll forgive himself for not believing his boyfriend sooner. Let’s not forget that Alec has sick bow skills and managed to hit Azazel in a very precise place to make him disappear for a little while. You would’ve thought he’d protect against something like that. Not to mention he’s going to be mad at Alec for what he did to him.
While Alec might be heading for trouble, Izzy is heading in a better direction. At first it seemed like she was going to suddenly be over her addiction the way she woke up in the morning just fine and told Simon about her addiction like it was no big deal, but when that vampire offered her blood you could see that she wanted a taste. Izzy hasn’t beaten this yet and it’s good that she’s going to seek help. I was afraid the show was going to sweep her issue under the rug.
Now let’s talk about Sebastian, since Izzy decided to bring him to The Institute, which didn’t make sense to me since he told her that he left the London Institute for personal reasons. I would’ve assumed that Izzy would think twice about asking him to join, and more importantly I feel like The Institute would do a background check before letting another Shadowhunter in from another country. Maybe I’m overprotective, but that’s something I would do. What’s nice about his character is that he seems to be helpful. He helped Izzy last episode and this time he helped Clary regain her powers. The issue is that he seems to be a little aggressive. He had no problem bringing Clary to tears, and last episode he burned himself. I feel like this all goes back to his mother and it may turn out that he developed abusive tendencies of his own, but that’s just a theory.
Clary’s powers are back, but for a good it seems like she gains some bad. Her powers coming back are great, but she achieved that by going to a sad place. If she continuously has to do that then that might cause some emotional stress for her, especially since Sebastian reminded her (and the audience) that she has no blood relatives left other than her father. Imogen wanted to study their powers, so now that Clary’s back, who knows if The Institute will use her for their own purposes. On top of all that, she now might have relationship issues. She’s dating Simon, but Jace is also an option and Sebastian is interested as well. Clary seems loyal, but her feelings could change, especially in Jace’s favor.
Jace’s powers are increasing. He used another rune this time without his stele. Who knows how they might grow down the line. He’s also gained a new family. Despite losing the one he thought he had with Clary, Valentine revealed that he’s actually the grandson of Imogen Herondale. His grandmother immediately took to him and even said that she’ll show him what it means to be in the family. Now he might get more authority around The Institute, but I feel like she could still use him for his powers. More importantly, it’s nice that Jace has a family. Simply seeing his eyes tear up showed how much it meant to him.
Last, but not least, is Simon. He continues to spread his secret to the Downworld. A threat to Raphael leads to the head vampire showing up with a couple of his people. Simon was able to avoid this attack by going into the light, but he revealed that he has that power. The other vampires were in shock and when Simon told them to leave it almost felt like had some real authority, but it seems he forgot that he’s not that strong and Raphael can always attack him in the night. If that wasn’t enough, Simon found out that Jace wasn’t Clary’s sister. He was worried and she told him not to be, but I can’t see him simply letting it go. Hopefully, all turns out well. If not, then at least Izzy and him make a cute couple.
