Jonathan continues to be an interesting, but confusing character. He has a bunch of powers, and he managed to infiltrate The Institute on his own, but he’s letting his father call the shots now. A father who sent him to hell. It doesn’t make much sense and it makes John seem more like a typical tortured soul that needs to be loved by anyone. Although, it was nice to see how much it meant to him when Clary said that she wanted to save him, but then he attacked without taking any of that into consideration. One moment he seems to be on an interesting path and in the next one he’s lost that spark. Now that he’s been caught and that Clary said that she wanted to kill him, the question remains of what his next move will be. Is he simply going to listen to Valentine, or does he have a plan of his own.
Quick side note: The Institute’s security still sucks. The main characters always talk about how safe The Institute is for people, but then multiple episodes prove them wrong. It’s not clear why the show keeps pushing how safe the place is only to have it be constantly infiltrated by threats. It’s honestly annoying.
As for The Institute’s new lead, Alec, he is now single. It was only a matter of time this season before the two of them broke up. There were constant things getting between them since the start of this second half of the season. Turns out the Soulsword is what broke them apart. They still care for one another, but Magnus needs to take care of his people, and that makes sense. Alec and him have been trying to balance a work and personal relationship, but things are only escalating and some drastic decision had to be made. A war seems to be coming, but what will the two do when they’re on opposite sides? The Seelie Queen doesn’t trust the Shadowhunters and Magnus is now on her side.
Maia and Simon are now a thing and it happened way too fast! For someone that was in love with his best friend and finally got a chance to be with her, Simon quickly moved on. It’s only been two episodes and he already asked Maia out. It makes Clary seem like nothing to him. Maia’s hesitation felt completely forced. She was totally into him, but then back out. It makes her seem like a character that doesn’t know what she wants. Her tragic love backstory was very touching and made her hesitation make sense, but it should’ve been said sooner rather than later. The two of them do make a cute couple, but will rushing into a relationship cause them trouble in the future?
Another relationship that’s in trouble is Luke and his partner. Luke manages to be a good pack leader when the show needs him to be, but he sucks at being a partner. For a couple of episodes now, Ollie has noticed that Luke’s behavior is strange. She’s finally gone on the initiative and planted a device in the restaurant. One that allowed her to discover that Luke and everyone else there is a werewolf. Luke is a bad detective.
The Mortal Mirror turned out to be the lake. Clary proved to be more useful. Turns out that her friend Dot knew where to find the mirror and would only give it to her. Not to mention the mirror was in a park where Clary used to play. The best thing she did these two episodes was steal the mirror back from her brother. She’s growing as a Shadowhunter and figured out that Sebastian was John. She even managed to steal the mirror back and escape. She also chose to deactivate its power only to realize it was a fake. The real mirror has been in her visions all along, and who knows she might be the only one who can get the mirror.
Out of the two episodes, “Awake, Arise, or Be Forever Fallen” turned out to be the better of the two. There was a lot more intrigue on what was going to happen next. Who was going to die? What would Magnus choose? How would John steal the mirror? Just to name a few. Hopefully the final two episodes will deliver and give this season a worthy finale.
