Snowfall 1×06 Review: “A Long Time Coming”

I guess you could say it’s been “A Long Time Coming” since a Snowfall episode has been able to remain engaging the entire hour. While not much action happened during the sixth episode, many characters’ storylines began overlapping, making one hope that the plot would speed up and actually move forward.

We have been stuck in an endless cycle of basic nothingness. Franklin’s character arc is one giant circle. He wants to deal coke, he doesn’t want to deal, he wants to, he doesn’t, and on and on. By the sixth episode, one would think Franklin would have learned to get the hell out. He’s putting his mother in danger, his uncle is telling him to stop, he’s been jumped and beaten while also witnessing a rape. Oh, and his friend killed someone in front of him. Honestly, it makes you question why Franklin is doing what he’s doing. He’s obviously highly educated and very smart, but his lack of common sense is starting to get annoying.

Another character who can’t seem to make up his mind is Teddy. During “A Long Time Coming,” he travels to D.C. to not only fill his advisor in on the mission but try to rekindle his dying marriage. His wife gives him one more chance to put them first and not the agency, but Teddy has been so flip-or-flop about the mission and family life that it won’t be surprising if he never gets out of his constant loop.

While the character arcs have been infuriating to watch this season, the cinematography has remained steadfast. There was a great transition at the end of “A Long Time Coming” after Alejandro picked Teddy up from the airport. They’re driving down the road discussing their next buyer and Teddy asks Alejandro to pull over for food. As he does so, we transition to Franklin who just arrived at his new “potential” buyer. It was a smooth transition showing the similarities of their predicaments even though they both live in completely separate worlds.

Now, the transitioning might have been smooth but Franklin’s deal was not. He, yet again, gets stuck on the wrong side of town as he tries to find new buyers within a Mexican gang. Lucky for him, it is the same location where Gustavo just laid down the law and became said gang’s supplier. Lucky for Franklin, Gustavo steps in to vouch for Franklin and ultimately save his life.

The last time Gustavo and Franklin met was during the premiere when Franklin told Gustavo he was a big fan after his wrestling match. This, however, is the first time the two have met while in the middle of business.

Now that storylines are beginning to cross, it’ll be interesting to see if the plot picks up. We know that Teddy supplies Lucia and Gustavo, but could Franklin become Gustavo’s new dealer? It honestly would make for a safer arrangement than what Franklin has going on with Avi. Only time will tell. Well, six more episodes at least.
